Garmin nüvi 755T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Garmin nüvi 755T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Solid GPS Navigator, But Where's Lane Assist / Junction View?

I have only used this device on one trip along a known route thus far. The device instructed me to go along a route that is shorter in distance and time than what I normally take; big plus. The directions and verbal instructions were accurate and timely. The speed limit worked correctly most of the trip, except for one section where it was posted 50mph and the 755T told me it was 55mph. The only key complaint, which I see others had as well, are the lane assist and junction view features. They did not appear once during the trip, even though I was on a highway for part of it. Also, there were no 3-D objects presented on the screen; I don't care about this feature, but Garmin markets the product as having this capability. Hopefully this will be corrected in future updates (if you register the product with Garmin within 60 days you get free map upgrades); if so then this is a 5-star product. If not, then the 750 is a cheaper option that provides everything that the 755T does except for FM traffic (standard on 755T; optional on 750), or get the 760 (same price, and includes Bluetooth).

lane assist & Junction view add'l coverage not free

I just got off the phone with Garmin and was told: 1. that Lane guidance and Junction View are both part of Lane Guidance 2. That additional coverage will come incremetnally with map updates and map updates (as opposed to hardware updates) are not free. So right now its a gamble whether your area is currently covered and you are home free, or you will have to keep buying map updates to get the additional Lane/Junction coverage. I've just ordered the 755 & will be going on a trip shortly after it arrives - if the coverage isn't there, then I will probably be returning it & keep on chugging on my Nuvi 660 until the coverage matures. I stopped buying updates for the 66o two years ago. I gave it 3 stars based on my experience with other garmin products. I'll update this after I get and use the unit. I decided to review it now as some of the other reviews seemed to imply that updates for add'l coverage would be free

The 755t more show than show

I have had my 755t for a week. This is my third gamin. When this unit works properly it looks and operates great. I bought it mainly for the lifetime traffic alert and no pop up antenna. I live in the Washington D.C. area. I have had lane assist operate just 2 times. If you are headed out of d.c to Maryland on 295 south and you exit on 210 there it is lane assist. That's it it has never worked any were else. The 3d view works in all of downtown d.c looks cool but no real value. Traffic alert only works on major roads so doing rush hour don't expect the unit to fined those unpopulated 2 lane back roads. No 3d view below the mason Dixon line. No traffic alerts below the mason Dixon line. As a matter of fact the unit for some reason refused to work in Norfolk VA? The unit went black every time i tried to pull up The map. It started working again in Petersberg VA. There are firmware issues with my unit. I have upgraded on line but the unit still says it has the old firmware on it. One last thing when crossing the Wilson Bridge from VA to Maryland (the bridge is not quite complete yet) the unit says recalculating 3 times than commits some kind of electronic suicide and shuts itself down. It than recalculates and i see the lane assist work for the second time when I exit 210 in Maryland. This unit is not worth the price wait 6 months if you can. The price will dip $100 and hopefully there will be more lane assist and the firmware issues would have been worked out. Frank

Not Impressed

A little background: My wife bought me a GPS for our anniversary in August. So yes, I'm a newbie at this stuff. She got me a Tomtom ONE, which is, for the money, not a bad little unit. But it had a few issues, so I thought I'd upgrade. For almost twice the amount she had paid, I bought a nuvi 255. This device was a disaster, inaccurate, nowhere near the amount of information on screen, no configurability ... well, yeah, I can change the voice, or the car icon - whoopie! That one went back, and I pre-ordered a 755t before they were actually available. I was impressed with the ads that show the ALG and Junction Views. I anxiously waited, and then one day, it arrived. The rubberized coating and feel of the unit was remarkable! The screen nice and bright. I couldn't wait to see the ALG and Junction Views, so I opted to drive 30+ miles to work the next day (instead of taking the train) and see the features in action. So off I went up toward I-95N to Jersey City. The first thing I found was that it was really delayed in providing turn instructions. It's a good thing I already knew how to get to work, because I would have definitely missed many of my turns. Uh oh. My second impression was that it was nowhere near as loud as my Tomtom. So when traffic stopped on Rt18, I tried turning it up ... but there was only one notch to go, and it wasn't much louder. So I turned off the radio and closed the windows. Next, I was surprised that the unit didn't seem to know that the turnpike has different sets of lanes for "Cars Only" and for "Cars & Trucks". It kept insisting that I "keep right" which would've put me in the mix with Cars & Trucks. I have found this happens every time I get on or off the turnpike. I guess someday a map update might correct it. For some reason, between two exits on the NJ Turnpike (and this happened coming home at night, too), it needed to "recalculate". It couldn't have been due to traffic, since there wasn't any, and the TMC didn't indicate any, either. Maybe it's because I used that "Cars Only" on-ramp instead of trying to fight with the trucks. Weird. The Speed Limits were right on target. This much I can say. I also found that the unit is extremely fast at recalculating a route. That is a good trade-off for those times it doesn't give enough notice about your exits, I guess. And what of those two new features that convinced me to spend $[...] on a GPS unit? ALG came up ONCE in all the times I've used the device in Central and Northern NJ. Junction View? Can anyone tell me if this device actually HAS it? I have never seen it. So I have a device that is not quite as good at navigating as the $[...] Tomtom, but it lets me play MP3's and let's me view pictures, has a currency converter (that doesn't update automatically like the one on my cellphone/pda), and a calculator (I guess in case the one on my pda breaks). I can't change colors, or very much of anything else. And I can hardly hear it if I have the AC on. I've gotten an RMA for this unit, and I've begun to play with a Navigon 7200t. So far ... REALLY liking the Navigon. It has some issues, too, but ALG and Junction View and 3D View all work in my area. It also comes with lifetime traffic, and to top it all off, it gives GREAT DIRECTIONS, in time for me to navigate. One Hundred US Dollars less than the MSRP Price I paid for the 755t, [...]! Oh well, I gave up the MP3 player. I'll need to use my radio and in-dash CD player, I guess. And I suppose I'll need to view pictures on my 24" LCD PC Monitor when I get home. Geez, and I wanted to look at them while I was driving. Curious, has anyone else had these feelings about this device? Or maybe mine has some problems? Has ANYONE from NJ seen ALG or Junction View? I can't believe Garmin would omit such a highly-populated area that has such complex roadways. Not impressed, -pvs

It Works Just The Way It's Suppose To

I only have this unit for 10 days, and so far, it's working the way it is supposed to. I have not encountered any glitch at this point, and I can't comment on the TMC as there is no coverage for this feature where I live. But Dan Nichols posted a pretty extensive review on October 9, '08, and I must say that I totally agree with his comments. The only difference is, that Dan prefered Australlian Karen while I prefered British Daniel, with a little more authoritative voice over Karen. The one feature that I like most on this unit over the 265WT, which was my first choice, is the LANE ASSIST. You won't appreciate it until you find yourself in a situation where you're in very unfamiliar places with a very busy traffic. So far I'm very happy with it and it deserves five stars.

TomTom GO 700 Portable GPS Navigation with Hands-Free Calling

TomTom GO 700 Portable GPS Navigation with Hands-Free Calling

Wish I'd bought a Garmin

I am about to embark on my second struggle with TomTom customer support because my second unit just failed. Getting the first one replaced was a nightmare. It's difficult to communicate with support, they respond slowly and their products are unreliable.

Great Unit; Great Customer Service

We've used our GO 700, Gabby, extensively for about 12 months traveling throughout the upper midwest not only for finding backroad routes but motels and restaurants as well. We even hauled her to Washington, DC to help us navigate the labyrinth of roads to find the stuff we wanted to see. It's exceedingly easy to use and the features on their PC software, TomTom Home, make it a simple task to maintain currency of software, maps, POIs, etc. It even includes a feature to backup and restore your GO! And operate your GO from your PC! Our GO 700 broke today and I called TomTom Customer Service. I has already done the diagnostics prescribed on their website and getting an RMA number and instructions to facilitate an exchange took less than 30 minutes and both calls were people answered by the third ring. Based on other comments here, I think TomTom has dramatically improved their customer support. The BlueTooth technology is way cool! Say Gabby finds a motel we want to stay at for the night. She displays the address and phone number and will even place the call from our cell phone if we want her to! Even with maintaining software currency, Gabby has her quirks. For instance, you pull into a town and are jonesin' for Subway. Unless its nearby, Gabby won't find it. There's no facility I've found for keying in a particular restaurant. We were entitled to one map update after buying Gabby and it'd be nice if they included a one year map subscription update given how quickly things change and the lead time that must be required to get it on the Gabby map.

Latest version???

I received a refund after ordering/receiving/returning two TomTom GO 700 as neither was the latest version. It would have cost me additional money to download updates on my new purchase. The company demonstrated prompt, efficient and courteous customer service.

DO NOT BUY TOM TOM!!!!

Well...this product looks great, but the love affair ended there. I was very shocked when I recently bought this unit and found out that the maps are very, very, VERY outdated. It seems as if they are from around 1990 as so many highway updates are not included. Subsequently, the device is more or less useless as every time it hits a new stretch of road or new on-ramp, it gets "lost" and stops giving directions. I contacted Tom Tom and even though they have newer maps and that they admitted that the maps in this piece of garbage are outdated--they had the audacity to tell me I had to purchase a new set of maps for $110. So, make sure you add $100 to trhe purchase price, because it will be completely useless out of the box!! I am a professional who drives daily over a 3 state region and will buy a Garmin and surely encourage you do the same!!!

Tom Tom GO 700 Portable Navigation System review

This product has proven to be just what the advertisment say it is. I have used it so far to travel from Maine to Boston, Maine to Atlanta, GA, Maine to Maxwell AFB, AL and all over Maine. I have been very impressed at how easy it is to set up and use. Everything you said would, came with the unit. I will be buying another one in the near future as my wife needs it to keep from getting lost on long trips. Thank you.

Magellan RoadMate 6000T Portable GPS Navigator

Magellan RoadMate 6000T Portable GPS Navigator

Don't buy

Magellan Customer service is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. They offer a free 30 day map update since all of their products ship with out of date maps. This would be a good thing except it is in the fine print of their products and their customer support email address that their website list is the wrong address. I had to get through to their customer service by posting a bad review on their website. By the time they responded my unit was beyond the 30 day limit and they refused to give me the update. This is a bad business practice. Garmin has a 60 day guarantee which is posted directly on their website in plain view.

Good, but not great!

Ok, I have had this unit for over two years. As stated before, yes I had freezing problems and it would reset and loose all the previous places I had been. I tried many times to upgrade the firmware to no avail and did spend countless hours on the phone with the India service center where I feel I knew more about a simple computer than the guy/girl on the other line. Thank GOD I had an extended service program with the store chain I brought it from and they fixed it for me. Hope the map update goes a lot smoother. The Unit now runs great and instead of the 5 seconds to turn the unit off now it's just two. Just wish they had a smaller mounting arm as the OEM one is too long which is funny that the new guys say theirs is too short. No one is ever content.

Magellan 6000T decided to call it quits

I have had Magellan 6000T for over a year now and it seemed to be working fine overall with the exception of an occasional freeze up. However, from the past 2 weeks, the unit does not display the map and when any key is pressed, it responds after 5 minutes. The issue is not battery-related as far as I could tell since it is constantly charged and the battery indicator is green in color. I had purchased the 6000T for 450.00 last year. From now on I'll stay with the cheap units. At least that way, even if the unit breaks one can discard it with less pain.

Absolutely terrible

I have had this product for over a year now and was surprised when travelling from Mtl to NYC how this device directed me to drive through off highway country roads. I have tried to upgrade to a higher version of software 1.16 with great difficulty. My PC is asking for the Magellan Roadmate software. The unit never came with it. When finally located my Microsoft PC is advising me not to install it as it does not conform with Microsofts software conditions and it may harm the system. I have tried to contact magellans help ware, but have had no response. After reading all the horrible experiences from fellow magellan owners, i am frustrated enough to trash this unit and proclaim the truth, THIS SYSTEM SUCKS, and I for one do not recommend anyone to purchase a Magellan unit. If the company had any morals they would refund the money or excahnge all of their 6000T units for a model that actually works.

Hope you don't need customer service

The devil is in the details. The unit works as advertised, but the "lock ups" are something I've never encountered before. I have a built-in unit in my car, and it has never locked. Mine 600T locked so severely once, I couldn't even turn it off or reset. That brings up customer service. I called twice, and my wife called twice, and neither of us could understand what the reps were trying to say. Offshore CS is NOT OK if the reps don't speak the language of the customer - or vice versa. Also be aware that this unit is officially "not a current offering." Wonder when the support will stop? The unit came without a manual, so if you want instructions to take with you, be prepared to print out 140 or so pages. All in all - not impressed with Magellan. The good news is the price has been reduced by 2/3.

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Disposable?

I got a Tom Tom 910 for Christmas. I used it when I traveled out of town. I really loved it, but I put it away and didn't use it for a few months because I didn't go anywhere. When I needed it it wouldn't start. I reset it. I charged it. I reset it again. Called Tom Tom customer service. They made me reset and recharge and then told me the battery was dead. They said that I could return it for repair, and I asked how much would that cost. Answer - more than a new unit! I asked if I could buy a battery and they said the battery COULD NOT BE CHANGED!!!!!!!! So basically I used it a couple of dozen times and then threw it out. I won't buy another GPS that has a permanent battery.

T 910

This GPS is the best! I purchased mine refurbrished, it froze during the first times I turned it on. I hit the reset button on the back and havent had any problems since. This tom tom is turely the best though.

Buy Tom Tom at your own risk

I bought a 910 2 years ago. It has pretty much since then been sat side by side with my Sirius Sat. radio on the dash of my truck. My Tom Tom Died last week from what I can only summise as being overheated, I summise this as I have had problems in the past with the unit not switching on when hot. I called Tom Tom tech support to be told the unit was out of warranty and they do not offer a repair service. I was offered a Loyal customer discount, which basically meant I'd have to spend alot of money with them to get a replacement. Funny how this device has sat on my dash for only 2 years and dies whereas my Sat. radio has been there for over 5 years and is still going strong. All in all I am throughly disapointed in Tom Tom's service and the quaility of thier equipment. B e warned.

NEVER BUY A TOM TOM

If you want a good product stay away from Tom Tom products. I have used 3 different products from tom tom and maybe I'm a slow learner or tom tom has bad products, just stay away from tom tom so many better gps units to buy that are better. Never plan to use an update. Takes 10 hours to download and if it is the right download goodluck. I bought a europe update and got a guam update and they stated NO REFUNDS. NEVER BUY A TOM TOM!!!

Poor Product support-get a NUVI

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Bought the 910 about a year and a half ago. Stopped working so I followed on-line suggestions to no help . Want to meet the engineer who located the reset hole on this puppy. Even the tech rep admitted it was an embarassement. Techie told me I probably left it on the dock too long without using. Where said I is that in the product information (it's not) Sent it back (under warranty) and while I waited bought a NUVI. No comparison, the NUVI is much more intuitive and user friendly. Tom Tom replaced it with a "refurbished" unit. Didn't even bother to use it until tonight when I gave it to my daughter to use on a Fourth of July junket. Problem is the replacement unit is "home based" in Kinsale Ireland. Some nice travel photos were included though. Followed on-line instructions. tried to download fix through cell phone as recommended. Ireland centered unit doesn't recognize my Verizon cell. Set up the home docking station outside with an extension cord and tried to re-set unit with my laptop on-line. 20 minutes later-No good. Tried to call "customer support". Their hours are now 8:30 to 7:00. Hey Tommy Boy what happens if you have a problem with your navigation unit outside bankers hours? I'll be on the phone tomorrow but my daughter will be gone on her trip. Ironically, I'll be in Kinsale next week. Maybe I'll try to find the prior owner and we can go over his photos. Hey maybe when he returned his unit he got my Amityville, NY defective unit in exchange. Wouldn't that be a pub story? Whether I go to Ireland, New England or locally, I'll put my trust in NUVI. What kind of quality control department sends out a replacement unit without testing it or re-setting it. What kind of International marketing outfit that sells vehicle navigation units does not provide access to 24 hour customer support? I've owned both Tom Tom and NUVI, and how do you think I'd answer that question?

TomTom ONE 125 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom ONE 125 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

The TomTom One 125 - Great Starter GPS, Easily Updated Software, Some Missing Features

The TomTom ONE 125 3.5-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with U.S. Maps is one of many new updated GPS units available this fall. It is compact and well designed. And for those with more extensive foreign language needs than the standard "English or Spanish" options included with most beginner units, the two dozen included screen languages and even more spoken languages will blow you away. Perhaps the overall best feature is the "map-share" updates that allow users to alert when a route has been closed or changed due to construction. Instead of having to pay and wait for next years update, if you subscribe to this you get it for free! Additionally, the TomTom's safety features are also head and shoulders above the competition. The included menu allows you be alerted with speed warnings, traffic cameras, and even directions to emergency services via the one touch "Help Me!" menu. However, there are some basic features missing, including an SD memory card and text to speech directions. While I do not intend to outline all the features of competing products, I am going to compare this product where relevant to show users where they might need to consider other options. I personally have owned many Garmin models, one Magellan Maestro and a starter Navigon unit. There are even many more options on the market today, but I believe most users should be choosing from these four brands for a starter unit. PROS: + Great compact starter GPS unit with convenient all-in-one form factor + The "map-share" updates are the killer app of the TomTom GPS line; bad routes are corrected by users like you, and you can get the updates with the application + Comes with a GPS, USB PC syncing cable, car power adapter and mounting disk + The included integrated mount is more convenient, though it mounts closer to the window than I would like + An updated map is provided free of charge if they come out within 30 days of purchase + Add-on applications and updates are not all free but still priced better than Garmin's + AWESOME safety feature extras to alert for driving breaks, speed limits and thresholds + Also warns you by default to remove the unit when you reach your destination + Cool safety camera alerts give you audio and video of cameras on your route + "Help Me!" emergency menu directs you to emergency services with one click + Status bar preferences also allow extra features (compass, next street, etc.) + Many more included car symbols than Garmin or Magellin + Includes a pedestrian mode comparable to Garmin's under "planning preferences" + Interface Includes icons to alert you when you are nearing POIs + Does seem to update route changes faster than other models + Gives you the option to automatically avoid delays with traffic updates (though receiver is sold separately and it's not clear if and where one can be connected to this model) + The TomTom Home application makes it VERY EASY to update settings and download software extras + Still displays info even without a connection, unlike the Garmin models which sometimes *hide maps* till they find the signal again + While it is equally poor at acquiring signals as other models, it does seem to hold signals better than others + Incredible spoken and display language options give you almost 25 language options!!! CONS: - No SD memory card slot!!! That means internal memory is your absolute limit; new maps may replace old ones, and you will have to update for each new map with a computer when travelling, while with the Garmin you could simply bring all your maps on cards - The power / USB connection port is recessed into the bottom of the unit; this may make it hard to use some standard USB cables to connect to your computer in a pinch - The standard USB connection cable has a connector that is at a right angle, which keeps it out of the way but also makes it harder to remove - Dashboard mount disk must be stuck with adhesive to your dash; Garmin friction mount is better, though they do sell alternative mounts that are comparable for the TomTom - Need an additional attachment for traffic service (though not great in all areas) - Must hold on/off button for a long time when turning on - Did not come pre-charged, like my Garmin did - Software interface is not as slick as others like the Garmin and the Navigon - Neither the 2D nor the 3D views are as attractive as any of the other brands - Not the least expensive starter unit on the market - Does not include text to speech to give you spoken street names - No included Bluetooth connectivity to pair with your smart phone for hands free operation - Traffic receiver is sold separately and it's not clear if and where one can be connected to this model - Won't alert you to missed turns and will automatically recalculate, which may not always be ideal - Equally poor at acquiring signals as other models - Without a signal, the screen gives you much less device information (such as battery life) PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The product description notes this unit as "widescreen." It is not really widescreen. This is the standard 3.5 inch size that all starter units come in. In fact, though the body seems slightly more narrow than the Garmin 200 series, the screen is exactly the same size. The Garmin simply has a larger border area around the screen. It's adequate for me, but those with weak eyes often prefer the 4.3 inch widescreen models. The description seems to indicate that this unit includes Bluetooth, which it doesn't as far as I can tell. Bluetooth has become an almost standard feature for GPS unit. If I can find a way to pair my BT phone with it, I will update this. But this seems like a typo to me. FEATURES VERSUS THE COMPETITION Garmin has been feverishly updating their lineup, and the entry level unit that compares most closely with the TTO125 is the Garmin nüvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator. It is one of several updated models in the 200 series. Like this unit, it has a similar size and form factor. The Navigon 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator includes the additional features of text-to-speech (for street names) and free traffic alerts. It's also much slicker and has a 3D reality view that is best among all manufacturers. Similarly the Magellan Maestro 3250 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator adds a host of features, though the improved looks are still a notch below Navigon. It also includes maps of all of North America and Mexico standard. However, neither Magellan's nor Navigon's data updates are as good as TomTom's. Still, given all the extras, they are both strong competitors as well. Some of the higher-end 4.3 inch wide Garmin versions like the Garmin Nuvi 205W and Garmin Nuvi 255W offer more features and a bigger screen. Learning where to go in the menu to change settings also seemed less intuitive than the Garmin. One thing I may have to wait a year to learn is whether they are going to spam me with *map update* sales pitches like the Garmin does. Like all GPS units, this one also has the dreaded delay in finding satellites, particularly when indoors. However, once you do find a satellite this unit seems to hold the signal well. While satellite acquisition seems about the same on all my units, holding the signal was better on the TomTom. CONCLUSION This is a GPS unit that covers the basics very well and has many more software options than entry level models from the competition. Thanks to map-share and TomTom Home, the data seems to be updated better than units from Garmin, Navigon or Magellan. So if you need a starter GPS, this gives the Garmin a run for its money. But the included features, even for base models, are not nearly equivalent to competing units. The look and feel is also not nearly as slick, though that should matter less than features and functions to most people. But of course, value is a concern. For the price of Garmin's maps, they have guaranteed I will probably never buy an update from them. With the TomTom, investing in extra apps or updates might actually be a little easier to swallow. But the prevailing prices for the Garmin units themselves, including the 205, 255, and 255W, make most of them a better value. The 205 sells for about 20% less than this model, and the wider screened 205W goes for around the same price. Even a few 600 and 700 series models are not too far off in price. And many models from Garmin, Navigon and Magellin also include Bluetooth connectivity and free traffic updates. If you need the frequent updates and extra choices in languages, the TomTom One 125 wins hands down. Similarly, the safety features are really tops in this product category. Some may just want the TomTom because they prefer the simpler looking interface. But considering the greater number of features and lower costs of most comparable Garmins, many will opt for one of those models instead. Enjoy.

A Solid Option for Those Looking for a Navigation System (4+ stars)

With the acquisition of the TomTom One, I now have GPS navigation systems from all three major companies. The TomTom One stands up to both the Garmin Nuvi and the Magellan Maestro, although its pros and cons are quite different. I like that you merely have to tap the screen anywhere to get the menu. This unit has a wealth of options, including several voices and languages for spoken directions and route types, including limited speed and bicycle routes. You can use "map correction" for quick GPS pick-up if it shows you in the wrong location (good for when you've been in motion without using it.) You can select from several different "cars" to show your location and different map colors. The available options are too numerous to list here, but they exceed both the Garmin nüvi 650 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator and the Magellan Maestro 3100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator. But how does the TomTom navigate? The mapping software is much better than the Maestro and equal, maybe even slightly better, than the Garmin. However, its user interface isn't always the best. For example, to cancel a route, you have to go to the second page of options. If you miss a turn, it doesn't tell you (both Magellan and Garmin give a "recalculating" message), giving you a chance to turn around, and instead moves silently to the next version of the route. Pros: -- Spoken directions in advance. For example, "Take left ahead, then in a half a mile, turn right." The others only give you both turns if they will occur within a few seconds of each. You don't have to remember both directions because it will still say "Turn left" when it's time to make the route change. -- Reliable mapping software. It was the only one of the three to recognize that I wanted to take a certain road when I made a turn. The others tried to get me back to the predetermined route. Equivalent or better than the Garmin. Much better than the Magellan. -- Fold up stand that can stick to a windshield (if legal in your state) or to a mounted disk. When the stand is folded up against the body, it can be easily slipped into a purse or crowded glove box. -- Lots of options to personalize the unit. -- The set up is more compatible than the other two for removing this from your car and using it as a walking or biking GPS. -- No annoying "recalculating" messages when you decide on a different route. (See Cons.) Cons -- The points-of-interest are woefully inadequate. If you want to find a specific store or restaurant, you may need the address. -- Satellite pick-up can be slow, about the speed of the Garmin, but not nearly as fast as the Magellan. If you are sitting in the driveway, this isn't a problem; however, it can be if you're already driving in an unfamiliar area. -- The unit must be manually turned on and off. Both Garmin and Magellan ask if you want to continue on battery power. The TomTom assumes that you do, thus draining the battery if you forget to turn it off. -- It does not tell you if you've missed a turn. My ideal GPS unit would be to take the TomTom mapping, the Garmin user interface, and the Magellan satellite pick-up, but alas, customers will have to choose. Because all three do the job, I recommend identifying the options most important to you and then comparing prices. -- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

TomTom GO 510 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom GO 510 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom saved my sanity!

Okay, so I am the woman that is always lost. I have lived in the same area my whole life, but if I get turned around, I am hopeless. I started a new job about a year ago where I would be seeing clients all over Los Angeles County, and I knew I was in trouble. I bought a TomTom, and I can't express how much of a stress relief it has been! I have driven many many places, and it has only been wrong (slightly, and I quickly figured out the problem) twice. I spent a long time researching which GPS to purchase, and I am definitly happy with TomTom. No more Mapquest when I need to go somewhere, I can just hop in my car, input the address, and off I go! Some of the inputing takes getting use to - i.e. you put the city name first, then the street name, then the number. My only complaint is that you usually have to know if the street is North/South etc. and I forget to ask. You can also download new maps, cool voices, and other features from the website. It has tons of Point of Interests, so I can even go places if I know the name of the venue but not the address. Directions are given with plenty of advance notice, and even includes your next turn so you know which lane to turn into (Turn Right, then Turn Left). TomTom does not tell you the street name to turn onto - only the distance to go, but it has it on the screen. I don't have a cell phone, so I can't tell you about the bluetooth, or the internet features, like live traffic, but overall, I love my TomTom!!

TomTom Go510

I purchased the Go 510 because of the great reviews. I was a little dissapointed to find that my home address is not on the GPS map, like many other people this can be frustrating when the maps are not up to date! I have found many places not on the GPS map system, so TomTom get them updated!!! The GO 510 has performed well, I had a few problems of having to reset it several times over the first month of using the unit, but its run great since then and performs well. Other than the map updates it is a good unit. The screen is the right size, the voice for letting you know turns are coming up is great, lot's of POI to download. Just not updated maps....had to throw that in again. Seriously this is a good unit for the price, but with this unit being discontinued, buy an updated model that you get free map upgrades.

Nice item, but...

This unit is an older unit so the software loaded with it is dated 2006. I just bought in in July 2008. For anyone looking for the most up to date maps out of the box this is not the unit for you. I bought this to replace a Magellan Roadmate. It has some nice features but could use some the Magellan had such as multiple users and an easier to access volume control.

Poor quality and directions

I am greatly disapointed in the quality of the product. The device frequently takes 5+ minutes to locate my position when I turn it on. I shouldn't have to get the device out to the car and turn it on several minutes before I leave so that I can get directions to my next destination. Similarly, the battery life is very poor. After just a few weeks of use, it would routinely last only 5 minutes before giving me warning messages about the power. As a result, I need to travel with the charger at all times and cannot use it without it being plugged in which brings me to the next issue. The device is poorly designed. For some reason they decided that the only way you would ever want to charge it, is with the full base. You cannot plug the charger directly into the tomtom which means you must have the charger with you at all times. I also found that it frequntly asked me whether I wanted to connect to my PC, while I was driving. After a month of aggrevation, I called to complain and eventually received a replacement device. Unfortunately, only the issue about connecting to my PC was resolved which makes me think it is a poor quality system and this doesn't even go into the times when it gives misguided directions (something which I would assume that all devices do from time to time). I would recommend that you stay away from this device and possibily the TomTom brand.

Piece of Junk

I have had nothing but trouble with this unit. It could not navigate on the olympic peninsula in Washington state. Resets itself too often. Finally, when I really needed it one night, it died. Not a power issue as it was plugged into the car with the charge light on. Tried charging overnight - now it will not reset and not even come on. Returning it for something that works.

Magellan RoadMate 2200T Portable GPS Navigator, Silver

Magellan RoadMate 2200T Portable GPS Navigator, Silver

DO NOT BUY!!!!

I purchased this Because of Price and learned that going cheaper isn't allways better. I used it three times and now the unit won't even turn on. I've called customer service and get some guy in India who I could barely understand. It's not worth the hassle, Just spend the money on a Garmin.I saw some reviews where they were satisfied with there Magellin.I have nothing good to say about it and won't purchase another magellin product.

Very Solid

I actually have two of these, one for me, and one for a guy who works for me. I read over some of the negative reviews, most of them are referring to defective units. One was from someone who was trying to enter in an address that didn't exist. I use this unit for my company that provides mobile services. We have entered in and navigated to probably 1000 addresses using this unit. Working correctly (which it always has for me), it picks up signal within 30-60 seconds after being turned on, battery lasts for a while, and it recalculates fairly quickly, maybe around 5-10 seconds. My favorite feature is that you can enter addresses starting with the Zip code instead of the City which was not the case with my Garmin Steetpilot 340. This is a very inexpensive unit, if I were to buy another inexpensive unit, I would go with this one because I know that it works solid and have used it extensively to know that there are no major defects in its operation or design and will work dependably in any situation that I require from it.

Nice unit with very obsolete maps and poor customer support

This is not a bad performing unit and it would be a good unit except for one fact. It ships with (mediocre at best) maps dated August 2006 and Magellan wants you to pay $80 plus shipping for an update. If you buy the refurb and then the update disk you are at the price of a new Garmin Nuvi 350 which will have a one year warranty (instead of absurd 90 day as with the Magellan refurb - evryone else's refurbs come with same as new warranties, by the way) and it will come with current maps plus the Nuvi is a simply superior unit. (Consumer Reports Best Buy.) Do not buy this unit unless you simply MUST have obsolete maps, poor customer support (no excuse for not including a map update) and a very short warranty. Offering this unit with the ancient maps and no free map update is an intellegence test that Magellan is running on their customers. (My excuse, I simply did not know that they had the no-free-updates policy. Their competitors do provide free updates and I thought Magellan would follow the pattern.) I strongly urge that you think long and hard before rewarding them for their very anti-consumer maps policy. (Garmin and TomTom both give free update down-loads with the purchase of their units, new or refurb. No reason for Magellan not to do the same other than simple greed.) This is the last time I will ever even consider a Magellan product. I urge you to not make the mistake I did in buying a Magellan product. You can do far better for the same money.

Great Unit

Great unit, but it does not come with the crossover upgrade. It has to be purchased, seperatly. Unit works well and text to speech sounds good. Has a great battery life. Suction cup mount works well.

Expensive Paperweight

I'd have to say the biggest problem with this unit is how restrictive it is in entering an address. In neither the map function nor the address book can you enter one in directly but have to search for it starting with either a zip code or city and then slowly work your way through the screens till you've found the entire address. If it thinks your address is actually in a different city or the street name is different then you can't enter it. I had a business address that was #1036 on a street located in Bridgeton - according to their own company letterhead. I started with the zip code which produced 8 city results - Bridgeton and 7 surrounding towns. How does that happen? Doesn't the U.S. Post Office give each city their own zip code? I pick Bridgeton then have to type in the street name. It then comes up with the number range to type in and it only allowed #1-1001! After messing with it I discovered it was showing the street name as having #1-1001 but that same street also has a route # designated to it that I happened to know and when I tried that it showed the #'s available as 1-1100. If I hadn't been local, knowing that streets route number, and went by the businesses own letterhead I never would have found it. Actually discovered all this the day after I gave up on the unit and just winged it. A GPS unit is supposed to save time and this one does nothing more than take up more of it. What an expensive mistake I made. Also complained to the company that it tells me to take a longer route in one direction and the shorter route back and they advised this will be addressed in the many updates they expect to put through since it was such a new item. This was a month after I bought it 5 months ago and not one update has come out. Yes it has the nice features everyone else mentions(that POI editor wants lattitude and longitude, can't put in an address - gave up on it)but if you can't put address's in it what good are all those features? Don't waste your money or your time with this unit.

Navigon 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Text-To-Speech and Free Traffic Alerts

Navigon 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Text-To-Speech and Free Traffic Alerts

Great product with only one apparent con

I was one of the first people to buy this GPS (it was sold out for a long time after that). I have it for about 4 months now and I love it! The best features are: 1. The reality view which shows lane pictures and highway signs as they appear in real life. 2. Real-Time traffic update. It was delayed by about 10-15 minutes when I passed a few traffic accidents and congestion but still it's pretty awesome feature to have for the life of the GPS. The only bad thing I found was the time it takes to search where you are located in the country. Sometimes it takes 10-15 minutes to find the satellite signal. That's the reason why most of the time, I end up using my older GPS unit (MIO) because my old one takes no more then 1 minute to locate the signal (too bad it has old map).

Smart Unit

The Navigon 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigation with Text-to-Speech and Free Traffic Alerts is packed with features, fairly easy to setup with menu's grouped intellingently for general and specific settings. If you are new to GPS technology as I was (Yeah, I know Johnny come lately) be aware that it does take a considerable amount of time for the GPS to locate it's position the very first time you use it. I took mine outside, placed it on a chair and left it for about 35 minutes before it finally logged it's position the first time. Also the subsequent searches for new destinations can take 3-4 Minutes (not the 2 or less it states.) For the price (and I have been waiting some time because the $400-$600 I was seeing on these units was just too steep) this delivers bang for the bucks. One final comment.. when you exit the highway, it will direct you to keep straight on the highway you just left... it's a little confusing until you realize that it considers the service road / exit ramp as still part of the highway. That being said, I highly recommend this unit. So far, the Turn by Turn directions has been dead-nuts on, text to speech is pleasant and if you make a mistake... miss your exit for example.. no worries... trust me.. been there done that.. this thing rocks for getting you back to where you need to be. I gave this a 4 Star rating out of 5 because of the time it takes to calculate new destinations (after the initial first time usage).

Very pleased with first GPS

As my heading implies, this is my first GPS. I used it for a trip from central Ohio to Memphis and it was awesome! I accidentally left my atlas in my other vehicle and had no directions so I was leary, but the device worked almost flawlessly. The lane assistant was very useful in metropolitan areas. Satellite acquisition has only been a few seconds each time. The audio works fine. The screen is easy for me to read. If I had one negative it would be the POI database and POI accuracy. It is limited and sometimes would give me partially inaccurate directions (correct exit but location further down road than indicated). I hope the map update service and software upgrades will address the POI issue in the future, but the device is very accurate when you have an address. It also recalculates almost instantly when you make a wrong turn.

Great device

The 2200t is a great gps. Routing is efficient and accurate (ran some test routes), and the screen is very easy to read. It is also small enough to fit in your pocket. The unit itself is extremely quick and responsive. Once I got a satellite fix, a list of over 60 traffic messages were available. However, there are two disadvantages to the gps: - the lack of many POI's (points of interest) - variable satellite aquisition times (1-5 minutes depending on where you are) Overall --- I highly recommend. Great unit for the price.

Navigon 2200T - Just Got One

I just received my Navigon 2200T and have it for about 2 weeks now. First impression on the unit is the design is very nice, small and compact which can easily put inside my pocket. The reason I get this one over the 7200T is the 4.3" might be a little too big to put in my pocket and it is a little heavier too (not to mention it costs more). Like the previous review said the screen is big enough to see the direction. The bigger screen on the 7200T is only giving you the width which isn't very helpful. As far as performance goes it takes a long time to log onto the satellites (more than 20 minutes) every time I turn on the unit. I emailed Navigon customer support and they instructed me to reset the unit. I did that and it immediately acquired the signal. I said to myself "wow, it really works". Unfortunately as soon as I turn off the unit (or standby mode), the problem of logging onto the satellites comes back again. I am not sure if I have a defective unit or this is just the way this product is. There is no way for me to reset the unit every time I want a fast satellites signal. All my saved addresses will be lost and it is a real hassle to re-enter them again. I already sent another e-mail to customer support and hope the problem is the unit itself. SUMMARY- Pros: 1) Free Life Time Traffic; 2) Compact and light weight; 3) Good looking design; 4) Clear picture and direction; 5) Warn you if you are speeding; 6) Lane assistance; 7) Good price; 8) Fast response from customer support; Cons: 1) Logging onto satellites signal is long; 2) No wall charger with the unit; 3) No USB cable with the unit; 4) User interface is not as user friendly as Garmin; 5) No user manual with the unit, you have to download from the website; 6) The battery is draining fast, it won't last more than couple hours with a full charge;

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)

Should have bought it a long time ago!

I bought this product even though it was refurbished. I didn't want to spend $300 on a GPS but needed one because I just moved to another state. The GPS looked like it was brand new but the car charger didn't. When I plugged it in, the car charger didn't work but that was quickly resolved by Amazon & TomTom. The little gadget worked extremely well and rerouted quickly every time I took a wrong turn. The only complaints I have about it are: 1. Battery life lasts about 2 hours at most (but this complaint has been repeated by others so I expected it) 2. It doesn't tell me to do a U-turn when I make a wrong turn 3. The pronunciation of the street names by "Susan" is mostly inaccurate but doesn't bother me that much since other voices are not perfect either 4. It takes me on a lot of minor streets instead of major ones so I'm afraid I won't be able to find my way around without the GPS (I'm hoping I will find a way around this but haven't had time to play with the details yet) All in all, I am very happy with my purchase.

Overall great product for the price!

I have used this product a little over a month now and have no major issues with the unit. The only problem I have had so far is with the fm transmitter, because my antenna is in the rear of the car so it does not pick up the signal too well so there is a lot of static. For the price there is no other product in the market that can meet the TomTom 720 specs, such as bluetooth, voice guided directions, mp3 player, and so much more. By far the best feature is the quick re-routing directions, for example if you miss a turn or exit it will quickly calculate another route. Overall, great product for the price and you may think it is a refurbished unit there has to be something wrong, but there isn't and on top of the low price is an original factory warranty! :-) (Note: the suction cup can be difficult at times to stick onto the windshield, so first clean the glass with a little hydrogen peroxide, wipe dry, and apply some petroleum jelly to the suction cup and place on glass and I bet it won't come off again!)

Best Choice!!!

The Tomtom GO 720 is the best choice if you are going to visit Brazil. Tomtom is the best navigator in Brazil!!!!

Garmin 6xx series vs. TomTom 7xx series

I have tried a Garmin 680 and a Tom Tom Go 720. You can argue back/forth about the gps abilities of the two brands, but there is one BIG negative that the Garmin has vs. Tom Tom. The Garmin navigation screen is pretty, but information poor. No distance to objective. No speed. No miles travelled. No street names as you pass them. And no option to see any of that except by slecting a different screen. Tom Tom lets you see all of that on the navigation screen. If you never had it, you may not miss it. Once you have had it, if you buy a Garmin, you will regret doing it.

not as direct and friendly as a garmin

I own some Nuvi 760/770 before I rate this Tomtom. Physically its shape is not so sleek, i.e. thicker and less stylish than the nuvis screen. The on-screen directions while driving require some getting-used-to, though they are Not bad at all. The cable hookup and ports are not the most desirable. searching for addresses require some backing up of screens, which is less straightforward as the nuvis (even the Garmin C340 is more direct). But it is evident than the nuvis cost more... more than you would be willing to trade for. Overall, this is a very decent product if you never have the pleasure of the elegant operation of a Nuvi. Satellite signal capture (like speed) is comparable in both Tomtom and Nuvi. this Tomtom is given 4 stars (but marginally so)

Navigon 7200T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigation with Bluetooth, Text-to-Speech, and Free Traffic Alerts

Navigon 7200T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigation with Bluetooth, Text-to-Speech, and Free Traffic Alerts

Great Product but didn't get my rebate as advertised

I absolutely love my Navigon - so user friendly. Would recomend the product for anyone, but was very disappointed that I did not receive any of the paperwork to receive the $[...] rebate that was advertised at the time I purchased the Navigon 7200T. I'm not sure I would order from Amazon again.

I'm sending it back

I read a few reviews and did my research before I bought this unit. The famous line " looks can be deceiving" is all I have to say about it. Pro: The design is slick Lane assistance is helpful (the main reason why I bought it) Cons: Bluetooth works but not al the time. The unit didn't recognize my phone when it was turned on and even when I tried to reconnect it couldn't recognize it. Touch screen is not responsive. You really have to put pressure on the screen to get it to work right. Main map has no color scheme selections and it's very hard to read grey on gray. I guess if you only care about your final destination it shouldn't matter. The speaker is not loud enough even with my windows up. Unless you have it 5 inches from the ear don't expect to hear voice commands. I couldn't believe that fo the price of this model FM transmitter wasn't included. Voice recognition is a joke... it will find everything else except the street you looking for. Traffic Alerts are not accurate. The whole point of it is to tell me about traffic ahead of time and not while I'm in it. Overall it's a nice looking unit with cool design and many futures but nothing works the way it should. In my opinion it's way too expensive and does not live up to my expectations.

Not very impressed...

I purchased this after using a Nuvi 660 for two years. I wanted something different, fresh, and full of features. As with many others, the lifetime traffic attracted me to this unit, along with it's sleek look. It has all the features I was looking for (bluetooth, lane assist, traffic to name a few). A quick little unit, it gives great directions and has an awesome little map (software) on it. The screen is very informative as well. I haven't actually seen the "lane assist" yet, so I cannot comment on that. Nor have I seen the traffic. The "small font" issue is not an issue for me and it should not be for anyone! if you cannot read this unit from less than two feet away, then you DO NOT NEED TO BE DRIVING!! There are several areas in which I believe need vast improvements though. They are: 1. Battery Life - I used it for less than two hours and it died... Yes, it comes with a car charger, but I believe the specs say 3 hours. Not even close. 2. No "Search by Name" Function - this is incredible to me that this option would not be available. Instead, you have to search by POI, which means you have to know under which POI category your destination is located under. and we all know these are not always accurate. 3. Limited POIs - Notice it doesnt say 6 Million or 7 million POIs? It just says "millions" - which could mean just barely 2 million. My point is that I tried looking up Lowe's and Home Depot - neither were there. I called customer support and he said due to licensing they were not listed but that they were always adding more. I'm sorry, but in order to be an effective GPS system, you need to be able to compete with Nuvi and TomTom on this one. If I cannot "type" Lowe's or Home Depot, and it's not in the POI, how am I supposed to find it without finding the address on the net? A GPS MUST be able to do this - no questions. This is the major downfall for this unit. I'm sending it back. I purchased the TomTom 930T - I know this one has a search by name and I know it has Lowe's and Home Depot. We'll see how the rest of it works out!

An improvement over the last generation

Near perfect GPS unit. There are some kinks to work out, but thats what software update is for. My Motorola cell does not connect, but the brand isn't the most compatible. Key Pros. The route planning improved over the 5100 I had. Hardware upgrades gives more speed to the system. The spoken address entry is very helpful. Key Cons. The reset button doesn't make sense, its too small for car use. I'd like physical buttons or wheel for the volume control. The screen remains cluttered, but its text to voice, so not a huge problem.

Very Nice GPS

I'm not big on wordy reviews, so here's the summary: This is a great GPS for the $. I like the 3D lane assist and I have had no trouble with it getting a signal or finding a good route. I chose the go home feature, but knew a better route than what it suggested, so I purposely went the other way and the unit re-routed my trip to what I was actually going to take. I do agree that the fonts are small, but the unit speaks your turns, so this isn't a big deal. I also like the "caution" warnings when you are over the speed limit. The POI's seem fine, no complaints. The GPS tracking was quick and accurate as well. I like it.
