TomTom GO 920T Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator

TomTom GO 920T Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator

It works but not worth the price

Summary first: Plus: (1) Quick in recalculation of route; (2) Maps have street names on them; (3) Satisfactory selection of the places of interest. Minus: (1) Manual (included and online) can satisfy only retarded reader; (2) Some map errors cannot be forgiven; (3) bad customer service. This is my first GPS. I have tested it on 1000-mile-long trip (North-Eastern USA). Before the trip, I have updated everything - maps, satellite positions, voices. First surprise: if you select a human recorded voice for instructions and computer-generated voice for street names, the latter simply doesn't work. There is no place in manuals that would tell you that. Second surprise: In Pennsylvania, Tomtom map shows "ghost intersections" on hwys 15 and 81 - there is no intersection in fact, it comes in one-two miles. The splitting of 81 north of Harrisburg is shown later than in reality. This mistake can cost you a lot of time and maneuvers, so cannot be forgiven. City of Ithaca, NY and rural Pennsylvania: in a maze of one-way streets, 920T systematically invited me to make forbidden turns and U-turn on a one-way street. So, be carefull and watch the signs before going along tomtom instructions! You will get to your destination because it can recalculate the route before the next intersection, but this won't be the shortest way. In general, 920T routes were not always the best. 920T has included receiver for traffic information during 1 year. It was less than useful. It did not warn me about 2-hour congestion on 81 south while giving some other warnings which proved to be wrong. Do not pay extra money for it, consider 920 (without receiver) or something else. I have bought 920T here, at Amazon.com, and it came with promotion of 1 year free new map release. However, Tomtom site has declared promotion code invalid (how that can happen? - I asked customer service three times - no answer). It took me more than a week of interaction with customer service to defend my rights. So, my opinion is that 920T does its service but, most probably, there are cheaper alternatives with the same (or better?) abilities. So, I cannot recommend it. My next GPS will be Garmin - when they will put the names on the streets on their maps.

Poor POI

I'm generally happy with this product, except that the restaurants are not categorised. For example, I cannot ask TOMTOM to "Show me only Japanese restaurants around me."

Nothing's perfect

This TomTom pruduct gave me a bit of trouble here and there sure the loudspeaker made some funny noises and after talking with support and getting a worse unit in return you would think why does TomTom deserve 4 out of 5 ? Well folks theres one thing that counts the most... persistance and dedication to the customer and TomTom makes up for the odd poor unit that you might purchase because rest assured you will get what you want in the end and feel good about it. So what you have to buy maps or what not down the road.. im ok with that for now as i recieved the newest map upon purchase well for free and so will you, got a problem with the product? Call tom tom for starters and tell them whats up i know that on two occasisons i was helped greatly and if they sent back a unit that has an issue they'll get it right, just have some patients

Pretty Happy with this Unit

I travel all over the US and Canada delivering vehicles to many addresses and a GPS takes all the stress out of the job. I've got to admit, the main reason I bought this was the remote. I'd have likely purchased a Garmin had they not stopped including remotes. I've had a Garmin 2610 for over 3 years and loved it, but the touch screen went on mine and I had to have another GPS. When I first got the TomTom I didn't think I would like it. The interface is not as easy or intuitive as the Garmins, the remote is not as functional. Then after using it for about 6 months it's sort of grown on me. You tend to learn how to work it. I've been able to switch the menus around so that they're handier by using a program available on the web. The bluetooth remote is great as you don't have to point it. It lets you concentrate a lot more. I like being able to play the books and music through the radio with either bluetooth or FM. The hands free is a bit useless in loud trucks, but not too bad in a quieter car. I like that you can add second party applications to it and I've added a Calculator and a Mileage program that I found on the net. Also, as I mentioned above I was able to program it so that I have the menu items I want in the places I want. TomTom didn't do too much thinking when they arranged them. I can't believe how sensitive the antenna is on this unit. I can be sitting in the middle of a restaurant and it will pick up satellites. Somehow sees them through the windows. My Garmin would never do that and I often had to use an outside antenna for it with trucks that had a flat windshield. Not the TomTom. It picks up signals in all the vehicles I've tried it in. I think the newer Garmins have this technology too though. My Garmin is quite old. The poorest thing about the unit is the POI database. I've found that a lot of them are up to a quarter mile off, and it pales when you compare it to Garmin's. It has no where near the amount of POI's that Garmin has, and the interface won't let you search for them the way Garmin's does either. You can get a lot of POIs online to improve it, but I'm going to get my Garmin fixed up just to have thier database with me. The traffic seems to work sometimes. I'm sure it's only as good as the information it gets from the stations it picks it up from. I don't depend on it much as I'm in Canada and the only place it's good for is Toronto and Montreal and for the bigger cities in the Eastern USA. I turn it on when I'm there, but I've only had it re-route me once. Got to admit it was pretty snazzy when it did. I drove over top the usual route and saw the traffic at a standstill. It doesn't seem to work all the time though. I don't think the data updates fast enough. Probably not the TomTom's fault. The maps are a bit bad in Canada, but Garmin's are about the same. The Trans-Canada is off quite a bit in a lot of places with either machine. I noticed the streets were off a block in some small towns in Canada, but only twice. Don't know why that would be. Mostly accurate in the US. You have to watch it sometimes in town as it will take you out of the way sometimes. Garmin was the same. You just have to watch and it's not very often. Sometimes the touch screen seems a bit over sensitive when you are panning the map in the 'Browse Route' mode. Seems to do some funny things. Doesn't seem to be so bad in the 'Browse Map' mode. Hoping my screen protector will deaden it a bit. Anyway, I think I'll keep it. I think that the Garmin units are probably pretty fine and I sure liked mine, but the remote on the TomTom has me sold. I'm in a truck for 10 hours a day and the remote makes checking and changing a whole lot easier and safer than getting your face in the unit.

TomTom GO 920T - a great GPS unit

I've been using the TomTom GO 920T GPS for one month now, and I must say that I'm really happy with it. It's really an excellent product. The only drawbacks I see are: - this GPS seems to have a poor autonomy when used without power supply; - the Traffic service should be included for the first year, but the way of activating it is not clear; - the TomTom Home software has some bugs (MacOS X version)... But, again, this is an excellent product. And Amazon.com is definitively the best place to buy it! (the price is great, and the shipping was awesome: with regular shipping, I received in 2 days)

TomTom GO 730 4.3-inch Touchscreen Portable GPS Navigator with Bluetooth

TomTom GO 730 4.3-inch Touchscreen Portable GPS Navigator with Bluetooth

Very pleased with the Go 730

After about 3 months of research, I had decided I was going to buy the TomTom Go 720. I waited for a few weeks while I shopped around for the best price, and during this time, the 720's successor (Go 730) was available on the market. The 730 now includes IQ routes, which from what I understand, works similarly to the Dash - it gathers speed information from other TomTom users on every road, so if a certain route is known to have a very low average speed at a given time of day, the 730 will route you around that road to avoid the potential traffic. It also has the new lane guidance pictures - I've only seen this once so far in the month or so I've owned it, but it looked cool! At first I was torn between this model and the Garmin nuvi series, but the nice thing about this TomTom that was the selling point for me was that you can easily add/remove/edit points of interest. This is done on the unit (not via new map updates or mapshare) and can be done pretty quickly. The Garmin's brag that they have more points of interest in their bank, and while that might be true, there is always going to be some missing somewhere, so this is a nice feature to have. In fact, in my new town, a nearby grocery store was missing from the TomTom bank. I chose to look up the address of the store online, then store that address in the GPS as this type of POI with this name. You can also accomplish the same thing under the "Browse Map" option and find the proper menu option for adding the point. Suction cup: I've seen other reviews online about people having problems with the windshield suction cup mount. All I can say is that I used this GPS during my move from NY to NC, which was about an 11-hour drive. Not once during that time did the suction cup mount fail, however since then it has fallen off the windshield a couple of times. The trick that seems to work is to actually lick a few of your fingers and moisten the suction cup before pressing it onto the windshield. Washed-out screen: Some users have commented that in intense sunlight, the screen becomes difficult to see. I've seen this happen maybe once or twice, but it only lasted a few seconds. From what I've experienced, the sun has to be at just the right angle, and this doesn't happen very often. In the absolute worst-case scenario, you have a little trouble seeing the screen for a few seconds, so you simply listen to the voice commands. I don't see that as a very large drawback at all. Other features and comments: The nice thing this model does (I'm not sure if lower models do this as well or not) is that it predicts what time you'll arrive at your destination based on the IQ route information, current speeds, etc. I found this to be a handy little feature. The actual routing seems spot-on so far. Re-routing after you miss a turn is nearly instant (literally 1 second at the most, from what I've seen). Also, initial positioning after powering-on the unit takes only a couple of seconds. I did notice some fun things after coming out of a tunnel - my car seemed to be flying in the middle of nothing for a second or two before all satellite signals were locked on. No big deal, and kind of amusing, I thought. You can also very easily route yourself via roads or POI's. For example, I needed to do some shopping at both Target and Home Depot. I first calculated my route to Home Depot, then went to "Find Alternative", then "Travel via..." and chose Point of Interest. I found Target in the list, and it then routed me to Home Depot with a stop at Target first. My only complaint about this is that when I got to Target, it didn't say anything like "you've reached your first destination" - it's up to you to realize you're there, park, shop, then continue your route to your next stop. As far as I know, you can travel via several (more than 2) stops as well. I have an Apple computer (Powerbook G4, so not even an Intel mac) and have had no troubles with the TomTom Home software. I was able to download a bunch of free voices, a new car icon, and there's tons of other stuff in there, both free and not. Another minor feature is that it has a bank of POI symbols for the major chains. For example, McDonald's, Wendy's, Starbucks, and quite a few others have their company logo in there. If you pass by Wendy's (for example) you wont see the typical knife and fork logo for a restaurant POI, you'll see the Wendy's logo on the map. I was also able to easily pair my Bluetooth cell phone (LG VX8350). A lot of phone numbers for POI's are stored on the GPS, so if you need to call any one of them, it will forward the call to your phone for you. I haven't really used the spoken road names feature - this is only available on the computerized voice, which is the main reason. Nice feature, but not all that necessary for me. There's also a voice-input feature when you're entering town names or zip codes in your destination search. Overall this unit seems like a great bang-for-your-buck. I purchased this at $400, and it really is packed with features. I'm glad I went with the TomTom Go 730, and would recommend it to anyone in the market for one. I've had some experience with other brands (Garmin, Magellan) and didn't like their menus, features, or price tag. Hope this helps!

Not What I Expected

I had done a lot of online research regarding GPS'. I read many reviews and looked at all the options and features for each device. I was leaning towards the TomTom GO 730 as my top choice, however, I did not really want to spend $400 on it. I liked all the features that it said it came with, especially IQ Routes and MapShare. To make a long story short, I went to the store and I bought the Magellan 4250 for $350. You may ask why not spend the extra $50 and get the TomTom, well Magellan was giving me 1 yr free traffic which I thought was the better deal. Well, the Maestro 4250 was a good device, however, the thing that frustrated me was the outdated maps. The maps for from Q1 2007 and the next update would be out Q3 2008. That is a long time to wait. Another bad feature was that when I chose a route, I could not choose a POI along the route, I had to cancel my first route, and make a different one. The final thing that made me mad was the inaccuracy of arrival time. I am sitting in bumper to bumper traffic and it states I will be at my destination in 20 minutes. I would be if I was not sitting in traffic. So I returned it and bought the TomTom 730. I am so happy with this GPS. It has all the features I read about plus many more. I truly love the MapShare feature. There are restaurants that went up 2 months ago that are listed as POI's. This is because other Tomtom users create that POI and you have the option of downloading it. This is a great feature. Of course sometimes the POI may be of by a few yards but you can change it. For instance, there is a restaurant located on a main street and someone added the POI to be on that street. Although the building is on that street, you actually have to make a slight right turn to get into the parking lot of the building. I was able to move the POI so that the GPS will tell me to make that right turn. Then I can upload it to everyone else. Very good feature if you like precise directions and accuracy. the IQ Routes is also a great feature. It gives you an incredibly accurate arrival time. I have no complaints about the feature. You can also search for POI's while already in a route. The 730 will show you POI's along the route, near you, or near your destination. Awesome! I just placed a 8GB SDHC card in my 730 for mp3 and photos. Works great! This is a stellar GPS system and blew my 4250 out of the water. I am very impressed with how accurate it is. I will say that the 730 can automatically change a route if you have taken a different route then it offered the first time. The next time you route that destination, the route you took before will be routed instead of the original one over and over. Great product!

Wish This Would Had Been My First Choice

I originally bought a TomTom ONE 3'rd Edition. It is a very nice unit. Excellent screen and routing, but not much on features. If all you want is a GPS to get you from one spot to another you can't go wrong with that unit. However if you're a tech lover the GO 730 is for you. Bluetooth, mp3, photos, FM output, voice input and much more. And the new map features, especially the zoom (what they call "Advanced Lane Guidance") are very useful. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that the screen washes out some in bright sunlight. I found that tilting the unit down just a little helps.

Decent GPS

It's OK. Only complaint is that it doesn't work with my iPhone or my wife's Palm Treo phone. I would probably get a cheaper model if I had it to do over again, but I'm not disappointed.

Some good, some bad

Overall, I really like the 730. However, I ended up returning mine to Circuit City and biting the 15% restock fee because of a few serious flaws (see cons section). Pros: - Extremely fast interface response. You tap a button on the screen, and it switches screens instantly. - Very fast routing. A 15 mile trip with many streets takes about 1 second to calculate the fastest route using IQ Routes mode. - High quality; both the over-all feel of it and visually. - MapShare. MapShare is great and I use it all the time. If a road was recently renamed, closed, the speed limit changed, etc, I could instantly correct the map while driving and share the changes with other TomTom users. - Tons of features! Hands-free calling through Bluetooth cell phones, FM transmitter, MapShare, IQ Routes, iPod control, etc. Cons: - My main complaint and the reason I returned the 730 was because it would freeze while in hibernate mode about once a week. It never froze when "on", only when it was "off" (which is really hibernate/sleep mode). The power button would do nothing to turn it back on. I had to use a paper clip to hit the hard-reset button to start it back up. Maybe I just had a lemon unit. If not, hopefully a software update will fix it in the future. - The second reason I couldn't keep the 730 was because it was hard to see the screen on sunny days. The screen could be a little brighter, but I think the main problem was the screen itself. I would see a reflection of myself on the screen during the day, even when the unit was on. - The computer software (TomTom Home) that connects the TomTom to your Mac or PC is horrible. It crashes all the time, is slow, has a strange interface, and is pretty limited. You cannot plan routes on your PC in a real app and load it into your TomTom. You have to use the "Control my TomTom" feature to do this, but that is just seeing the TomTom's little screen on your PC and using the normal TomTom controls. - FM transmitter is weak. While I've never seen a good FM transmitter, TomTom messed it up with a firmware update. It was a lot stronger in the same place all the time, and with the firmware upgrade, it made the signal weaker. - Hands-free control of the TomTom is useless to me because you have to interact with the TomTom with your fingers just to start it, and even while speaking commands to it. - Last, but not least: when upgrading the maps on the 730, you loose all your MapShare corrections. For some reason, TomTom keeps specific MapShare corrections tied directly to the specific version of the map. This doesn't make sense to me, and seems to defeat the purpose a little. Conclusion: A great product that has a lot of potential. If your unit doesn't freeze and you don't mind seeing your reflection in the screen, I would recommend the TomTom 730.

TomTom support is not worth the price

I am on my second TomTom product and have been moderately satisfied with the products. I have always had trouble acquiring a signal and it often takes two to three minutes to acquire a signal. That alone makes it impossible to navigate out of an unfamiliar airport. But once the unit catches on it works fairly well. I am most recently disappointed with TomTom support. I purchased an updated North America map and have had great difficulty downloading it. Also, I purchased the map at full price and it was discounted within a week. Because TomTom considers a download attempt, "breaking the seal", they will not honor the discounted price. I will not purchase another TomTom nor will I recommend TomTom to anyone I know who is in the market for a GPS machine. If you do purchase a TomTom, ALWAYS read the agreements, word-for-word and do not pay full price for anything.

Tom Tom

Took this Tom-Tom on a trip out of state to an unfamiliar area. It was a real lifesaver. Can't say that I was real fond of some of the areas it sent us through at night but I guess it doesn't know about those things. Well worth the money spent on it. Now, if my husband can just figure out how to use the blue tooth function making his phone hands free as required by our state July 1 - the reason I bought it for him in the first place - we will really be in business!

VERY STAISFIED CUSTOMER!

I purchased this GPS system after talking to my son who owns the same GPS. He did alot of research before purchasing this particular brand & model. It is all he said it was. We used it on vacation a couple of weeks ago, and it was fantastic!! I never knew traveling could be so easy. I highly recommend this GPS to others. It has alot of wonderful features, very accurate directions, very easy to understand, and very easy to use. It was also a very pleasant buying experience.....reasonable price & quick shipping. Will definitely buy from again. Thanks!

Kay

I purchased the TomTom 720 at the last minute and paid for expedited shipping. The respose from Amazon was the it would arrive in 3 to 5 working days after the purchase. The 3 day time was OK, but the 5 was too late for a trip I was taking. I called the company phone number, and they indicated it had been shipped. They e-mailed the UPS tracking number (through Amazon) to me. I was able to determine that it would arrive in time for my trip. It actually arrived in 2 working days after the purchase. I am very happy with the GPS as well as the company that handled the purchase.TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

Originally 5 stars, finally 1

When I first bought this product, it worked as advertised and I was very satisfied. Over 6 months, the power button began to stick and the unit would freeze up often when I needed it most. In the last week, the touch screen alignment went out, meaning there was no way to make choices. So, I finally give the unit 1 out of 5 since it lasted only 6 months. From the 'net I see that I am not alone in being ripped off by this low quality but high priced device. I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 770 and hope for better things given their reputation in aviation.

Awesome product

I bought this for my In-laws and they love it. It is very simple and very easy to use, even for the technology challenged. I love the POI for upcoming exits and the ease of use.

Pretty good for the price

Overall this GPS has been well worth the money. It's interface is very intuitive and it re-routes almost immediately when I miss a turn. Occasionally it suggests a route that is longer than I would expect but it has always lead me to right location. The six million POIs have also come in handy as I always know where the nearest gas station/bank is. Highly recommended!

Basic no frills navigation

This is a basic GPS, has no picture viewer or mp3 player and does not speak the street names ( which I find not to be a problem. It does one thing. Gets you where you want to go. I got this one because its similar to the one used in the Hertz rental cars. Except the Hertz version has like 20 million points of interest. This one has 6 million, which is better than most at his price range. I think the additional POIs in the AAA tourbook make the difference. Speaking of the AAA tourbook, its great. You get info on lots of resturants, hotels/motels, attractions etc. Its not perfect, sometimes sends you in a roundabout way, but I think all GPS systems are like that. Basically for the price its a great little GPS.

Thanks for the help

Now, with my Magellan Maestro 3210, I am able to go anywhere and never feel like I am lost again. This opens many doors for me. I wish I had one many, many years ago.

This Magellan doesn't get lost...

I recently purchased this product for a family vacation to Flagstaff Arizona to see my brother. On the way out we took only Interstate Highways. The unit never missed a beat. We always found the right road and turns. There were plenty of points of interests along the way, too. After all, this unit sports 6 million POI's, that's right 6 MILLION! The unit's screen was plenty big and bright for daytime viewing. The automatic dimming for night driving worked well also. The lag time for finding satelites wasn't overly large and very tolerable. All that said, when you come off the major roadways the Exit POI's disappear. There was not one to be found. We had to just hope we could find a gas station when traveling from AZ to CO taking smaller highways. The unit is only as good as it's maps though, which are pretty accurate. The fact that the unit doens't tell you exactly what street name you are turning on was no prblem at all as the name IS displayed for your co-pilot to tell you or you can give it a quick glance. Overall this is a very good unit for the price and I haven't had any trouble with it. This is one Magellan that won't get lost. Magellan Maestro 3210 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I'm impressed!

All I can say is...WOW! Right out of the box this unit worked perfect. The screen is big and bright and the larger keyboard made making changes simple. It has so many features...for the money, you can't beat it. Of course I was lucky enough to get it on sale. As your driving down the road it even shows lakes and ponds that are coming up. Definately one of the best things I have purchased in a long time. Now, I have only had it two months...but so far, wow!

Love my Garmin

I will never get lost or ask for directions again. On first use I didn't program for the fastest route so the first trip was little longer that it should have been.

Love it!!

I shopped around for a GPS for sometime before deciding on this one. I really like the larger screen size and the text to speech is a real plus. I was really surprised at how fast it recalculates the route. My friend has another brand and hers takes a lot longer to recalculate. All in all, it's one of the best purchases I've made in a while.

A good one

When I saw other products like Navigon, I was a bit in doubt, which one I should go for. But this is pretty good so far. Sometimes it is slow in acquiring signals but most of the time it ok.

I miss one feature the most.

I previously owned TomTom one so I can compare this Garmin model to the TomTom. Most of the features are the same except one that was on TomTom was missing in this Garmin model. If you choose "cross-streets" as your destination, you better know the name of both streets. Tomtom has the same feature but it allows you to chose one street and "any" for a cross-street. Perhaps I should save into favorites locations of places I go to once in a while but I don't and that is when this feature becomes very useful. Other than that, menu on the Tomtom i found a bit more user friendly. One thing I liked a lot on Garmin was that it detects when I turn-off car engine (since I keep it plugged in all the time) and asks if it should shut-off; if no response is given it turns off after 30 seconds.

Great for the price

I have used my Magellan with great success. Not being the one for great written directions it has helped me a great deal. My only complaint are the instructions with the package need to be more informative re the need to download or to upgrade.

Magellon for Father's Day

This product is phenomenal. I bought the Magellan Maestro for my 74 year old father for Father's Day. He is, to say the least, non-computer savvy. However, he was able to use the GPS with ease. The instructions are easy to read, and the on-line help was fast and reliable. He is currently off roading in Nevada using his new navigation system and having a great time.

Great tool, Great service

If you need not expensive GPS - this is the one from you and Amazon is the place to buy it.

Magellan Maestro 3100

Product is good. I travel for work and it is quick and easy to use. Sometimes it does take a long time to change to my location from a previous one.

Review of Magellian GPS 3100

Works well. Acquires signal fast, maps equal to other units. In addition to voice prompt of turns, it also signals via beeps right vs. left turn. Handy device, well worth the price.

Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

buy, cheap, premium, lowprice, low price, best, business, pesonal, car, auto, motorcycle, portable, position

DO NOT BUY THIS!

I bought my Navigon 5100 and was fairly happy with it for a couple months. Then one day it could not find my current location. I've tried rebooting it and restarting it at different locations, but it never worked again. now it just sits there and mocks me. The one thing that sold me on buying this product was the lane assistance, but it never worked well. It only comes on when there is light or no traffic. I don't really need lane assistance when all the lanes are open. It would tell me there was traffic even when I could see there was none. When the Navigon did work, it took anywhere from 3-10 minutes to start giving directions. When giving directions it does not tell you if the highways off ramp is south, north, west or east. It's terrifying when your driving and can't figure out which off ramp to get off on. I never understood why they put the speakers on the back of the product. It makes the verbal directions low and muddy. If they had simply put it on the front, it would have had great sound. Whenever a traffic alert came up you would have to touch a small box on the screen to make it disappear. Living in Los Angeles, new ones were coming up once every two seconds. Annoying and disrupts driving. Navigon is a bad product. DO NOT BUY!

very poor product overall

I bought this product after returning a Magellan to costco. I live in los angeles and I thought it is a great bargain to have traffic feature since half of the freeways in southern california are jammed most of the time. I used to think that all GPS are more or less same and I am educated enough to get used to any GPS, but this navigon 5100 broke my myth. This product has such terrible software that it is almost unusable. Only people who can rate it high are the ones who have never used a Garmin or Magellan. My unit is on the way back to amazon. I am giving it 1 star but my wife would acually give zero. The following problems. Audio volume is not just very low but also much poor in quality. I don't expect this from any $[...]+ product in 2008. This is the most fundamental feature of a turn by turn GPS. Hats off to its designers who hurried up in launching this product. GPS claims 6 million+ POIs but search is so poor that very popular restaurants such as Panera bread are not there. This is on top of the fact that search software is already very poorly designed. My previous magellan was so impressive that just type in a few letters and list will show up like a dictionary. To start GPS, hold the start button for 30 seconds. Anything less and it will not start. I knew this problem before buying and I did not rate this as a big problem but only after using, I realized how terrible this experience is. 3D lane view, which is supposed to be the selling feature of this GPS, is barely more useful than arrows shown by Garmin or Magellan. This feature looks decent but I rate this as very low value since I don't remember missing a lane or exit on magellan. Just replacing an arrow with 3D picture is not a great technology skill in my opinion. Worst of all is the useful ness of traffic feature, which was the main reason, I bought this. Traffic alerts are updated but never announced by GPS. I should know early enough that there is an accident on my route. Only way I learned was to look at the screen and guess, which of the accident events are on my route. Just imagine doing this while driving a car. It will make sure that you also cause one of those accident events. Worst part is that There is no difference in alert between a freeway running 5 miles an hour Vs 50 Miles an hour. That is the most important info I need to choose my route. Only if it is running really slow, I would choose to change the route. Traffic alert is just a nice toy feature but zero usefulness in real world. I cannot comment on routing since just one usage told me that this is worth returning.

A great GPS!

I've been looking at GPS units for a long time, unable to decide based on all the hype. Along came Navigon. The free map upgrades and lifetime free traffic service really piqued my interest. This unit is simply great so far. I tried it on two trips this last week, one a short 200 - miler and the other a 1300 mile adventure to Oklahoma. I had been on both before, sans GPS, so this was a test. "Miss Daisy" ( that's what I call her ) did very well on both. She got a little flummoxed when I took alternate routes locally, as I know my local roads, but the "recalculating route" feature worked very well. I really like the Reality View on major interstates - showing upcoming exits and lane changes that way is superb. The traffic alert worked great, even without the external traffic antenna. There is major construction ongoing around Indianapolis and she took me on the exact alternate I had already used before, no problem. The so-called "hockey stick" windshield mount is rock-steady and actually looks great - much better than all the other mounts that hang right in your vision next to the mirror, with ugly wires dangling all over. The only real negative so far is the volume on the voice alerts. Even at maximum loudness it's hard to hear with the radio on or any traffic noise. The pronunciation of some roads is a little off, but whose isn't? Every area has different accents and no computer-generated voice could ever perfectly duplicate regional speech ( think New York versus Georgia for example ). The battery is listed to last 4.5 hours and I got just under 4, but I think that after "exercising" the battery a few times it'll be fine. Even so, if you only need to plug in the DC cord every 4 hours I see no problem. I'm planning another long trip next week and I'm sure Miss Daisy will do fine. A note to those who don't read the setup instructions : you really should -- even if you "know it all" about every GPS out there. After setting my preferences ( POI, etc.), it does what it's told. All in all, I think Navigon has a winner here.

navigon 5100 is a good product.

The key features the make the navigon above other GPS's are the True View, a extreamly helpful tool, and the real time traffic reports which are free for the lifetime you own it. The only things i think could use improvement are, the speaker could get a little louder, although its plenty loud when on the mount it comes with. and the size of the buttons you need to use to enter address are too small but i haven't had any issuse of pressing the wrong one but i keep thinking i will. Also it includes the 2mb memory card and an extra external antena which I've never needed but nice just in case. Also the mount works great and is a great disign.

average product

This product is good but not very good. It always say take I-XXX, but it never says or never display North or South. Which leads into confusion many a times. Apart from that good thing is connectivity. Signal strength is very good. My apartment no is coming in the list. I tried many a times putting that but my apt no is not coming in the list which sopposedly one of the oldest building in the area.

Magellan RoadMate 1412 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

GPS Travel Mate Navigater

Only a week I had this. Did not have any problem setting up. Easy to read, Easy to see map and roads, Tested few trips Acuracy is very good no complaints yet.

Returned it, half-disgusted

I was going on a trip and my Sanyo (my review: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1IQ2MOBUMBWBQ/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm) conked out a few days earlier, so I rushed to CCity and bought this unit at $250. It seemed to work OK, except that it was slower at (re)calculating routes than the Sanyo. Also, at a couple exits I took off I-15N close to Mesquite, the unit returned "No POIs for this exit." The problem came when I was driving out of Page, AZ toward the Grand Canyon South Rim. The unit told me to take Coppermine Road for 42 miles and then join US-89. Worked fine for 15 miles or so - but after that, the paved road ended, and the rest of the path was dirt track!! Not something to be driven on in a Pontiac Grand Am (tried for 6 miles). Was turned back by a wise Native American (this is Navajo territory after all), who made his disgust for the GPS well-known. I later found out that if instead of starting down Coppermine Road, I had made a right, US-89 was just a couple miles away. Incidentally, at the start of Coppermine Road, I made a (wrong) left - the GPS showed me (the arrow) as perpendicular to Coppermine Road, but it was just slow to adjust to my car's movement (should have seen the road signs, my bad). I ended up going down US-98 for 15 miles, as Magellan said I could take a right and join Coppermine Road. Except - the right was into a fenced-off farm!! I got such repeated non-existent turns all along US-98, till I returned to Coppermine Road. On the plus side - the 1412 performed reasonably well back in Las Vegas, even pointing me to an Indian restaurant at the Rio. Still, I returned the 1412 to CCity, and will be sending my Sanyo in for warranty service (truthfully, not sure how it would have performed in Page). In the mean time, I will buy a Rand McNally map... One of the guides I picked up in Page showed Coppermine Road properly as partly "unimproved road." Guess I should not have relied entirely on the GPS system.

The Best for your hard work money

Can you find anything like the Magellan RD 1412 for less than $200 bucks? no i don't think so 4.3 Screen 6 Million POIs Text to speech Fast satellites. and it's Magellan.

For the money!

I've be a user of GPS units for many years. The positive reviews offered here seem to be complete and accurate; the few negative reviews don't take into consideration the cost of this unit, so I will just touch on several points to help round out the overview of this product. FOR THE MONEY, this product is fantastic; I think the best on the market. Very bright display, very simple, very accurate. The text to voice on this unit is one of the clearest and most pleasantly synthesized provider of information that I've run into. Heck, I think you could turn this unit upside down on the seat next to you and reach your destination without effort. This unit is so new that all of the newest maps come loaded into it. I live in a fast growing Phoenix Metro area where highways are always coming on line and everything is here. I must have been one of the earliest purchasers of this product because there was only one review at the time. I waited until now to fully use and review. Multiple destinations, a great address book setup, simple to change things on the fly, I must recommend this product. There may be slightly better products with more features for more money, but if you want a real performer that is heads and heals above other units at this price point, you can't go wrong here.

Got this one [...]...Love it!!!

[...] The first piece I got, I was very frustrated with it. I couldn't get it to work...good thing it has the graphic display to show which/how many satellites are locked in. Mine didn't have any locked in to the GPS. I realized immediately that the product was defective and I got it replaced the next day. I love the feature to set the GPS location manually (through "user options"). So sometimes when you turn it on, at far distant place from where you turned it off, the GPS will know approximately where you are so that it can lock in with the satellites quickly. It is a great feature. I also like the screen size...the beep before each turn and the 6 million POIs. I also like the feature that when a bifurcation appears on freeway, it tells you to stay on the road with the name. I have used some GPS which just tells you to stay on the road (without the name) and it is confusing because I could have already jumped onto the lane which is about to merge onto some other freeway. I haven't used the trip planner...I'll update my reviews someday when I use it.

Great GPS

I am very pleased with my GPS. Amazon sent it too me is excellent time. It works wonderfully.

Garmin 260W

Finds satellites fast, I like the feature that it annoucnes street names. Sometimes doesn't plot the best route. I would like a route review feature prior to driving. But works great.

Works great but no routing

Product works great. Compared to a Magellan which my friend bought for $60 less it simply is a better product in terms of usability. Magellan has a lot of bells and whistles but it's cumbersome and slow. At the end of the day you need one that recalculates fast, easy to use, has a lot of points of interests and gets you there with simple visual and voice instructions. Reason I gave it 4 stars is it doesn't have routing capabilities and only has one waypoint. The more expensive models have these.

Some short comings of Nuvi GPS system...

There are so many 5 star ratings and articles on nuvi that I decided just to focus on a few things that I found were annoying to me... Item 3 also has shaken my confidence in its ability to avoid unpaved roads... 1) Nuvi always shows the the time when you would reach the destination. If you are crossing the time zone, this could be annoying. Better would be if it only shows the "Miles to reach the destination" or "Time to reach the destination". There is no way you can get nuvi to show that. This feature is in Magellan, and very convenient and time zone proof. 2) The navigation method has choice of shortest time or shortest distance... Both of which are unpredictable if you are on the best route. Example, while driving from Mountain View, CA to Reno NV, while on I-680 it tried to take me to I-5/I-80 Via Stockton, rather than straight thru I-680/I-80,and saving around 30 miles. I had "shortest time" set. 3) Near Elko, NV, I took a diversion to Lamoille and mountains near by. I had set to avoid any unpaved road. while going up all went well, nice road to the top of the mountain. But while returning it took me thru a distance of about 40 miles on unpaved road to get me back on I-80, rather than quickly trying to retrace the paved road (NV-227, that it originally took to go in) back to I-80,about 15 miles. Now sure I could have turned around and gone back to right road like I did in (2) above, but I was always thinking that soon it will connect to paved road, which only happened, after about 40 miles.

Fills my needs

This is my first GPS unit of any kind. Overall, I am very please with how well it works. Having it for just a month now, I am still exploring its capabilities. I had heard of problems with GPS if you don't follow its directions, but have seen none of that. If I choose a different route, say, around a traffic problem, than the one suggested, it just recalculates and shows me the way. The one thing that I can downgrade the unit on is the text to speech. While it is helpful about 80% of the time, it does have a tendency to mangle the street names. If the name is a straight up name, it has no problem. But, sometimes it destroys the name. It's a good thing that you can glance at the screen and see the written name. Without that as a backup, there are times that I would not have known what it was talking about. An example would be the street name "Pacifica". The other day I got what sounded like "pa-fee-ka". And when I drive a little north of here, it destroys the word "Sacramento". But these are really minor things and I would not say that it is a problem. Overall, I would have to rate this unit very high. I drive around finding address every day and this little thing has saved me a lot of time. I have gotten to the point that I don't even think about where I'm going, I just let TomTom take me there. It's never wrong TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom ONE XL-S

I bought this as a graduation gift for a college bound niece who historically has no sense of direction <g>. Selection was based on a) spoken directions (because I think looking away from the road at a screen is dangerous) b) 4.3 inch screen vs. 3.5 (because when you do need to look at the screen it should be easily readable c) other reviews on Amazon and CNET d) price. Initial set up was a snap. And the TomTom DOES acquire a satellite very fast. Feature navigation by report has been easier than on the parents Garmin. No reported issues with the maps and directions. A lot of GPS' went on sale around graduation time, and I still haven't seen a value proposition as good as this one.

My first GPS system.

I LOVE IT I picked the right device for me. My TomTom's interface is perfect for my needs, and the home base software installed perfectly on my Mac. Although I'm a map lover, and will most likely continue to plot my own long trips, this tool has become my savior in efficiently getting around within a very confusing metro area (Washington, DC & northern Virginia).

Great text-to-speech GPS for the price

The 4.3 inch widescreen is well worth the price premium over smaller models. Internal antenna, no flip-out one like some Garmin nuvis. The internal speaker is loud enough that I don't miss that it doesn't have an FM transmitter. Several voices included, but only a couple capable of text-to-speech. Comes with TomTom Home software which give you one free map update, and lets you download map updates from other TomTom users. The Tomtom One Xl Carrycase with strap is a little pricy, but fits this GPS well.

Poor Spoken Directions

Bought this for my parents in California, and they loved it. Until they tried the spoken directions. The text-to-speech struggled with Spanish names in and around San Jose, causing no end of missed turns and confusion. Replaced with a Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator.

Great value -- some have low volume

I also have a 130 with marginal speaker volume. This is really odd, because the speaker is huge, and other independent reviews have commented on how loud the unit is (e.g., http://www.gpsreview.net/tomtom-130s/). I may decide to return it for a replacement, but even with this problem it's a great unit at a great price. The desktop software (TomTom HOME) worked well on both XP and OS X (though the OS X version can't simulate the TomTom unit in operation yet), kudos to TomTom for that! I was able to update the map to the latest USA/Canada maps without a problem (and I did a full back up first), though the transfer was a bit slow. User-generated POIs are a plus, as are the map correction features. I recently took a trip to the midwest, and coming into Chicago with this unit was a real life saver. We were also able to navigate through rural Wisconsin (looking for artisan cheese manufacturers), and the unit did pretty well there too, though sometimes the roads had minor inaccuracies and we couldn't locate one address on a rural route. Route planning features are pretty good, and the ability to plan via a place or POI is nice. (You can't do multiple waypoints like the higher end models, though.) Battery life seemed good, the unit was plenty bright, and the auto night-mode worked perfectly, switching just as the sun went down. For the price, I ding the 130 one star for botching the volume issue. Also, I'd skip the 130s. I saw no need for it to try and read the name of the street to you. The mount seemed to work quite well -- easy to mount, remove, and pop off the unit while leaving the mount on the window. It did fall off once or twice, but usually stayed put if you attached it firmly and then rotated the suction cup dial. The ring attachment to the GPS unit worked well. I was considering the Garmin Nuvi 205, but it wasn't shipping before my trip. (Looks like it's still not shipping as of today, June 26, 2008.) Overall, I'm happy with this unit, other than the low volume issue, which isn't really too bad as you can hear what it's saying, and the visual indications on the unit itself are really clear.

Better than Garmin

I owned a Garmin GPS. Unfortunately, the maps became outdated and we got lost in Orlando because the roads had changed. I tried to update the maps and contacted Garmin by e-mail 3 times for assistance. They offered to sell me a $99 map upgrade. However, when I really researched it, the unit was obsolete and could not be updated. This was never addressed by Garmin. Since I wanted a unit that allowed frequent map updates, the Tom Tom seemed perfect and was priced right. I solved my problem and have been very happy with the Tom Tom.

Speaker volume not an issue on all units, really nice compact GPS!

This is my first GPS unit, though I spent 12 hours in a car with someone else's Garmin Nuvi recently. I have tested the TomTom around town (small city, upstate New York) for several days, and accuracy is spot on; calculating directions for out-of-town trips I know well is also extremely accurate. The speaker volume issue certainly seems to have affected some part of the production run of this unit -- for others (as evidenced on other online review sites), the purposely large speaker on the back is more than loud enough and is actually too loud if cranked up too high. Mine seems fine, and that's at 75-80% volume, so I can even go louder if needed. If you have a unit with the low volume or garbled speaker, send it back and request another if possible. A note -- the "link volume to speed" function doesn't boost the volume higher at faster speeds; rather, it lowers the volume at lower speeds; at regular highway speeds, the volume will be unaffected by this setting. I don't mind the somewhat more pixelated maps on this unit as compared to the Garmin; in practice the map view moves smoothly. I do wonder if there is enough free memory in this unit to accommodate future map upgrades, as there's only 30 MB free now and that's with just one "computer" voice installed (the only one that can read the street names, as opposed to the generic "turn right" voices available). I like the compact, foldable mount, I like the screen and I like the ability to submit map corrections and to be able to benefit from the corrections of others; even though this unit doesn't support multidestination routing, It seems to have more choices than the lower-end Garmins to avoid particular routes, use particular routes, put in detours and add waypoints. The software is compatible with Mac, though the early version I was prompted to download had an immediate upgrade. Be careful disconnecting the TomTom from the computer -- make sure you have disconnected it through the TomTom Home menu, rather than just ejecting it off the desktop/Finder view, as I evidently corrupted something by not disconnecting properly. I was able to restore it, but this shouldn't have to be done -- back up your TomTom (option available through TomTom Home software) so that you can restore its contents if needed. I do wish the battery life was a bit better, though this is an improvement (by 50%!) over previous TomToms.

arrived defective

My tomom arrived defective. I would only get an X when turned on. Virtually no written instructions came with unit. I spent 3 hours researching online to try and fix it. I sent it back. I will get a Garmin.

Would have been a great product except....

The audio... wow, does it bite. I updated my device to the latest software, didn't help. It's not worth paying the extra 50 dollars for the text to speech if it doesn't work. The the only and biggest issue. I'm returning it.

Great gift for dad's day

Great invention fun and easy to use. The kids enjoy looking at the map and hearing the directions. Makes driving somewhere new less stressful. Word of advice, keep a map on hand. If the areas you are in are newly built (roads, communities, etc.) the GPS will not identify and go blank screen telling you to go back to the last point. The text to speech feature is wonderful. Your eyes stay on the road while your ears hear the clear instructions. Very happy I made the purchase.

Solid product thus far

I have had this product for almost a month now and it has been very helpful. I waited a long time before I finally bought a GPS because I've always been good with directions, and it never bothered me to use Mapquest before going on a trip somewhere new. However, since I have made this purchase, I have really valued it. I don't have anything to compare this model to, but I can say that this is ridiculously easy to use; it has given me no issues (like faulty directions, or poor touch screen responsiveness); and accomplishes all that it needs to with some nice features at a low price point.

Easy to use, I'll never get lost again

I love this GPS, easy to use , clear directions, and the price was right..

easy to use

This is our first GPS and we found it very easy to set up and use. We are very happy with our purchase. Mary & Dave, VT.

Excellent GPS!!!!

Very good item!! Clear directions, loading fast, and easy to control. I used to used TomTom before, but it loads slowly, and often shows wrong directions. Magellan never has these problems!! As a first-time driver, I like it very much.

Garmin Nuvi 760

The nuvi works very well overall. There are times where it takes the longer way than it should, but there are many times where it gives a me a shortcut.

Product great, concern about the purchase process

Amazon invited me to review the product and I will, along with some comments about the purchasing experience. I love the product. Comments about the purchasing experience. Maybe I am too greedy. I purchased the GPS on the Amazon site, but it was directed to Beach Camera. The item was received on time, in good condition. My issue, maybe an incorrect one, is that in the past when I have purchased electronic items and the price goes down within 30 days the seller will match their lower price and even competitors. Well, the price did go down and I wanted to get the reduced price, I foolishly suggested I would return the item,( as allowed during the timeframe) and immediately re-buy it at the lower price. Again, most stores I've dealt with will lower the price without having to return the item. Well, I was directed to return the item with all appropriate packaging, ship it prepaid, with a 10% restocing charge. This, I believe is to prevent the issuing of a lower price by making it so inconvenient and expensive to return. Anyway, I swallowed the price rather than go through that hassle. However, in the future I will think seriously about online buying from Amazon and deal with people face to face who will honor lower prices within a 30 day period. Once more, the product is great.

Love my 760

I bought the 760 for a cross-country road trip between California and Chicago for myself and my son. We used it for everything and it was amazing! It directed us to every hotel we booked and every restaurant we chose. It kept track of our drive times, kept us aware of the speed limit of the roads we were on and gave us plenty of time to be prepared for upcoming turns, even with the voice turned off. I LOVE it.

Hey Garmin - Read my Review!

I cannot add much more to the other Reviewers. This is great GPS. But, I HATE how the search returns characters from the middle or end of results. I'm looking for Applebees, - and I type in: APP and Find - in order of the distance ... hAPPy panda hAPPy china snAPPle distribution stopgAP Performance and many, many other business with 'app' ANYWHERE in their name and names. I SWEAR to you, Garmin, NO customer searches for the Middle or End of terms we are looking for.

Stick to paper maps!

I purchased the Nuvi 760,after returning the 660 for its poor maps. The 760 came with 2008 maps, and Garmin would not let me download free 2009 maps.It seems the unit I bought had been activated 4 months earlier.I don't know if it is Garmin or Amazon sellig returned units as new,but no more Garmin products for me! I would not bet my life on the directions the 760 gave either. The nearest police were 5 towns away, same with hospitals. We have 2 police stations in this town, both over 25 years in the same location. Our hospital is 5 times the size of the nearest one the 760 gives! My 3 year old in-dash gps is twice as accurate!

TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

buy, cheap, premium, lowprice, low price, best, business, pesonal, car, auto, motorcycle, portable, position

TomTom One XL review

For a Brazilian, a GPS like this is a must, driving in the USA. Except for an afternoon in Atlanta, where it put me in a loop, making turns between I-75 and I-85, it guided me safely during four weeks. It is really a big help.

Turn right in 200 feet

While this is not the best GPS navigational system out there with tons of bells and whistles, it gets the job done. Newer and more expensive models include voice recognition and text to speech features. I feel that these are overkill and not really needed, especially text to speech. How often are you able to actually read street signs before the intersection anyway? It is much easier to just be told right or left. A quick glance at the screen also shows the street name and your exit is overlayed in red. This is great for confusing highways with multiple ramps in one place. I do have two issues I do have with this device. First, it would be nice if it told you which lane you need to be in. There were several times where I did not realize the lane I was in suddenly became an exit or split into another highway. The device does try to help by instructing to exit left or right far enough in advance to get you to move in that direction. One nice feature that I really never thought about before is that depending on your speed, the device gives you more or less warning on turns. At highway speeds it gives at least 2 miles warning. But at city speeds it gives yards or feet. The second complaint is that the device saves your personal information on volatile memory and sips on the battery to keep it stored. If you do not charge the device regularly, the battery will eventual run out and your home information and preferences will be lost. I have no idea why this can't be stored on flash memory with the maps.

Bad maps

I purchased a TOM TOM One XL in November 2007. When I got it, set it up and downloaded the map update, our street was not on it. We have lived here for over 18 years and the road is one block off of an interstate in GA. While I use this unit in my Mobile Service Business, I have been sent down dead end roads as well as been told to turn right 4 times in a row and the told to turn left. This was at a major US highway intersection in Milledgeville GA. The route was taking me 1 mile to the next right turn, then 1 block / turn, then 1 block/ turn, then 1 block, then turn left, which took me right back to where I started the was told to continue straight to my destination. With the price of fuel these days, I need a more reliable unit to take me down the road. Called Tom Tom and when I asked about the lack of current maps, I was told I could purchase a new map for each of my units (Now Two) At 79.95 each, I told the operator no thanks and I would try another GPS from another Mfg. Having recommended TOM TOM units to several customers, I now have some explaining to do. The only thing the Tom Tom Operator kept saying was "I'm sorry you feel that way" Sorry doesn't make it when now I'm out the price of two of these units. Should have done my homework before I bought.....

TomTom review

Nice product. I wish there was a mechanical attachment. The vacuum or suction cup only stays attached for about 15 minutes.

This US model has worked great for me in Europe

NOTE: I bought this in the States, didn't open it until I arrived in Germany, and it has only been used in Europe. I work in Germany and wanted to get a GPS to get around without spending too much on a GPS. Obviously GPS systems with only US maps are cheaper than any dual US/Europe GPS, so I researched different brands and models that were compatible with online map upgrades. I found a great pick with the TomTom One XL. I bought the system when on sale for $200, and I bought the "Western Europe" map upgrade online for $120 (thru TomTom home). There is not enough internal memory, so I put the new map on a SD card. I had a few issues after purchase and download of the Europe map, but customer service was great (no waiting on the phone, and they stayed on with me until the issue was fixed). OK, so the new map wasn't as simple as "plug-n-play," but after 30 minutes on the phone with U.S. customer service troubleshooting my problem, I ran a flash file on my XL, I turned on the system, and after 45 seconds of searching for sattelites, the GPS was tracking my location in Germany. The interface is adequate, with large buttons on the 4.3" screen that make it easy to choose. The tracking of my location has pin-point accuracy, and when I turn on the system, it takes less than 60 seconds to locate my position. My mount is solid, and I have excellent reception without any tacky antennas. POIs are slacking, but I'm just trying to get from point A to point B. I'm a basic user. Overall, I'm very pleased with this US/Canada/W Europe GPS for only $320 total. It has been a great convenience getting around city and rural Europe, especially since road signs and names can be confusing here.

Navigon 2100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

buy, cheap, premium, lowprice, low price, best, business, pesonal, car, auto, motorcycle, portable, position

Basic level GPS

I baught this product 2 weeks back. so far I did not have any issues. recently had a long trip to maryland from New Jersey. was very good and handy in night times on country roads where the street names are not visible. pros. simple to use, immediate sattelite reception. route profile options good.reliable in most cases.3d vision with reality view is awseome.night vision is good. cons. no mp3, bad pronounciation of street names, does not have latest maps.occasionally hangs, touch screen somtimes very slow.

difficult to use, wish I could return unit.

The unit is much more difficult to use in every aspect than most all of the major brands which I have used. Most problematic is it is very hard to read the screen because of the gray color and very small type used for the street names. Also, it lists only half of the streets on the screen no matter what zoom level you are using and never lists the street that you are approaching. Most of the other street names that you are approaching are so far to the left and right placement on the screen that it cuts off most of the name. It has a small number of POI compared to other brands. Forget about entering a POI if you don't have the address, unbelievably difficult using the menus. Routing to entered destinations is often illogical. I wish I could return it and apply the $ towards a better brand. At this point I only use it in case I get hopelessly lost.

Poor Performance

Based on Amazon Reviews, I was convinced that the Navigon 2100 would be a great GPS choice. I was also convinced that Text To Speech would really be a helpful Navigation Tool. I liked Navigon's reputation. When I received the unit I found it very difficult to set or program my destination. It was also very poor in recalculating a route change. Almost to the point of being riduculous--being told repeatedly to take a U-Turn for several miles when I chose an alternate route. I really wanted this unit to work and gave it every chance to function as it should. The inability to set the destination was a most major problem. Perhaps there was a malfunction or a keyboard hanging poroblem with just this unit. We returned the unit to Staples and got a Garmin Nuvi 200. There is no comparison in the two. The Garmin is so simple to set the destination and recalculates instantly. By far the Garmin simply works and does so easily. I don't miss the Text To Speech that much as I am now familiar with the Garmin Navigation Screen and do just fine without it. At least the Garmin gets me there with exactness and ease of operation. The Garmin is so easy to program and works flawlessly. Unfortunately for me the Navigon 2100 was not acceptble in these two functions.

A bit of a disappointment....

I have had this product (Navigon 2100) for about 6 months now, after needing a new GPS unit for a vacation. I had sold my Garmin 2610 in the hopes of finding a better unit in the future. Well, the navigon was not the better unit. The majority of it's use was during a 2200 mile round trip to Florida. During that trip, it did it's job satisfactorily, but not exceptionally. On the plus side, the reality view is a very nice addition to such a cheap unit (even though it's just a picture of the exchange you're about to encounter). The 3D was a step above my old Garmin unit and I was pleased to have such a feature. With such a feature, it was easy to see what streets, merges, exits and POIs were coming up in the next mile or two. Up to date maps, crisp voice guidance and sharp picture rounds out the positive feelings I have for the 2100. On the negative side, the color scheme used for 'daylight' mapping is very plain and hard to see while going down the round (I found this to be the worst part of this GPS). The cheap mount keeps falling off of everything I attach it to (window, smooth parts of the dashboard, etc). It seems that the suction cup is just not strong enough to hold the unit and resist the handling you do to the unit. Crazy route planning at times (going through a town instead of the road that runs outside of it). Crazy "time to destination" readouts (5 hours to drive 150 miles on a highway?? I don't think so). Last, but not least, all of the numbers, letters, etc are just too small to be usable (ex. speed, elevation, direction, etc). I, for one, liked my Garmin's large numbers to see how fast it thought I was going and the elevations. It's safe to say that Navigon tried to put a quality product out on the market, but fell short in my eyes. I might be comparing this unit to an originally $1200 Garmin, but some things on the Navigon shouldn't be the way they are. It's best to keep looking for a low-cost quality GPS unit than to decide on a Navigon 2100. I found it wanting of more....

A very good value!

Ok, after wading through these negative Navigon reviews, I bought the 2100 to see for myself and put it side-by-side on the dashboard with the TomTom 130-S and the Garmin Nuvi 200. Each was in the $150 range, so price is not a factor here. Each has a 3.5" screen. 1. The voiced street names in the TomTom and Navigon beats the Garmin 200 which lacks text-to-speech in this price class. 2. Each of the three gives you one free software/map update right out of the box. 3. The Navigon fee-based updated POI's is not as user-friendly as the TomTom, which has a web site with many free databases. Garmin has the capability to add databases too, but most of them are also fee-based. 4. The complaint of a "gray land" basemap on the Navigon is only a personal opinion of reviewers here. The gray basemap, in my opinion, is far less distracting than the multicolor eye candy of the TomTom and Garmin. It's a map people, not a Disney cartoon. 5. Battery life is comparable in all three. 6. Only TomTom gives you the USB cable in the box, though it's necessary for all three to interface with your computer and the companies' Web sites. How cheap of Navigon and Garmin! 7. It would have been nice to have the sexy, modernistic car mount of the Navigon 5100 and 7100 packed with the 2100 instead of the clunky Erector set version. But the new TomTom fold-flat, low-profile mount beats all GPS mounts on the market today. 8. Only the Garmin handles "pedestrian mode" well. TomTom doesn't have that option, and Navigon gets totally confused traveling at a slow walk. But really, use breadcrumbs if you can't find your way back home jogging. None of these three GPS units guide me with the best possible route. NONE! But, until you can program your own desired route and save it for future use, we'll have to settle for each of their quirky route calculations. Conclusion: Of the three, Navigon's "traffic report" capability puts it ahead of TomTom and Garmin in terms of features. But that costs an additional $99 list. Using all three, I rank the TomTom #1, the Navigon #2, and the over-rated Garmin #3. Obviously, Garmin has a good reputation, but it's also obvious that Navigon and TomTom are working harder to bring the GPS buyer more features at better price points. As far as the Navigon being difficult to operate: figuring out how to program -each- of these GPS units takes a little time, but folks, it's not rocket surgery.

(You can't do multiple waypoints like the higher end models, though.)

Battery life seemed good, the unit was plenty bright, and the auto night-mode worked perfectly, switching just as the sun went down.

(Looks like it's still not shipping as of today, June 26, 2008.)

Overall, I'm happy with this unit, other than the low volume issue, which isn't really too bad as you can hear what it's saying, and the visual indications on the unit itself are really clear.

GARMIN 660 NUVI

TAKES A FEW TRIPS THROUGH KNOWN ROUTES WITH CORRECTION BEFORE IT MAKES A DIRECT SHORT ROUTE WHICH IS NOT OUT OF THE WAY. DOES NOT SHOW ICONS FOR GAS, REST STOPS, OR HOSPITALS ON MAP SCREENS.

LOVE IT!!! You won't regret it! Just get a different mount.....

I love my Garmin 660! I wanted a navigator with the larger screen (it's completely worth it!) and I wanted the mp3 player. Now I don't have to get an ipod! (My car is from the stone age and only has a tape deck) This thing gets me wherever I want to go! I was suprised by the amount of small roads this has on it! Even the small dirt roads it has mapped!!! I highly recommend this navigator! But be careful of the suction cup mount for the car.....mine kept falling off no matter how I attached it. So I had to go out and buy a sand bag dash mount from Garmin instead. At least now my navigator won't keep falling onto the dash board! Haven't tried it with bluetooth, although I will soon.

Garmin nuvi 660 review

I have never used a GPS before and bought it before going on a cross country trip. I love it! I practiced using the on-screen controls and updated the maps before leaving which helped tremendously. The unit has performed flawlessly. It is easy to use and did a great job getting me pointed in the right direction even when I would take scenic detours.

Blackberry bluetooth and FM transmitter problems

It's a great overall design; very easy to use, good navigation and a nice screen. But there are two problems. It frequently repeatedly loses the bluetooth connection to my Blackberry. I suspect Blackberry's Bluetooth software is a factor since other phones work fine. Garmin suggested I update the software again (just did that a couple of weeks ago) as they said there is a new bluetooth driver that might solve that problem. The second, more serious problem is that the FM transmitter is too weak. I can't find any empty channel that is weaker than the Garmin transmitter. Garmin said there was nothing they could do about it. They claimed its strength is regulated by FCC, but I told them I have several others FM transmitters I've used that did not have that problem. Overall, it's a mixed bag. I'll probably keep it for the navigation if I can get the bluetooth connection to work with my Blackberry.

I have not been lost in over a year, and that is saying a lot.

This was actually my third GPS, and my first experience with Garmin. I have a terrible sense of direction, and I travel quite frequently for my job. My two previous models were Magellan, and the switch to Garmin came when the touch screen on my Magellan started to go. Thanks to a Best Buy 4 year coverage plan I was able to walk out with a brand new Nuvi 660, and I swear by it. It is incredibly accurate, has a very extensive (and reasonably up-to-date) list of points of interest, and has a healthy collection of extra features (so many in fact that there are many I will never even think to use). It continues to amaze me just how frequently it comes in handy. Whether I need a post office, a gas station because I'm on empty, a cup of coffee in the morning, or somewhere to eat for dinner, it provides a remarkable number of options. It makes travel simpler and more comfortable to put it simply, particularly when you're unfamiliar with an area/route. A welcome convenience is the bluetooth option, which I felt I would not use until hands free became a state law in NJ. Now I keep it plugged in even when I know where I'm going because I can receive incoming calls without picking up my cell phone. It can make understanding each other a bit more complicated, but that is a flaw of every blue tooth item I have tried to date. Generally speaking, the routes are logical and the estimated time of arrival is within reason, though you will find it changes as lights, traffic, speed variation, and other factors throw it off a bit. The main draw for me was the relatively wide array of points of interest, the large display screen, and the solid reputation. I have not been disappointed and I continue to appreciate my Garmin Nuvi 660 on a daily basis. The fact that I have not been lost in well over a year is truly nothing short of a miracle. The negatives that exist with this model are particular to GPS' in general - broken signal in major cities/deep tunnels, occasional illogical local routes, it occasionally takes a few minutes to pick up a signal when first turned on, somewhat inaccurate estimated time of arrival, and rare recommendations to turn down a one way road.

Excellent price and great GPS

I really like this brand and model after much research. The blue tooth feature came in very handy while traveling and looking for hotels.

First Thoughts...

I have used this product for just a little more than two days, however I wanted to share a couple of pieces of information I thought would be helpful. - This device is extremely easy to use and well designed. I am very impressed so far. - The nuvi 360 linked up to my iphone via bluetooth with no problems. It uploaded my contact list to the nuvi, and the voice quality is excellent, with plenty of volume. This feature works MUCH better than I anticipated. - As soon as the nuvi 360 arrived at my door, I booted it up (6/24/2008) and registered on Garmin's site. This allowed me to download the 2009 map update, which must be done within 30 days of registration (and no doubt there is a time limit from date of manufacture/purchase). This process worked flawlessly, and I am now using the 2009 map on the nuvi 360 along with the most recent software. This seems to be an excellent product for a great value.

Pretty good

It does its job. 'Shorter distance' is ridiculous. Generally ok, but not wow'd.

even better than I hoped

this garmin is SO easy to use. you've GOT to remember to put out the antenna though--otherwise it's not helpful at all. it has lots of search functions and gives great directions. I especially like the restaurant feature. we found that the voices other than the "american" ones seem to be a little softer, so having an australian garmin wasn't possible. :( the bluetooth feature is excellent and it's compact enough to fit in your pocket which is nice, too. overall, we really like it, find it very simple and accurate, and think it was WELL worth the money.

2 stars as i am not AS lost anymore

this unit is expensive and does not deliver as i expected. i am unsure as to why it takes FOREVER to find satellite reception, and this really impacts on its usefulness. maybe it is because i live in NYC?? as far as updating it. i have used to computers- mac and PC platform, connected to the garmin website and no luck. this was VERY frustrating. so overall, not a good purchase, and definitely at risk for finding a new home on the side of the highway one day.

Tom Tom Is Wonderful

I purchased this product a month ago and am extremely happy with it. I have found new routes to work and some new locations around work and home. The community share feature is nice and the additional voices available make it more fun to play with. The remote control option is a nice plus. There are a couple of downsides but they are minor. The points of interest for restaraunts are not sorted by category (very minor), but you can create your own categories and sort them yourself. The second is that very few phones from sprint are compatible with the plus services. There are ways to make them work, but it is a little more difficult.

Set-up was much harder than I expected otherwise it seems great

I have a Mac and figuring out the initial set-up was much more difficult than I expected. Now that everything is set-up I am fine. I am taking it to Europe next week so I will give it a good workout up in the Alps.

A must have.

I'm not a gadget person so my review will be breif. The Tom Tom is a great unit to have, I have not been disappointed once. The remote is a huge benifit, my wife is able to make changes while I'll drive for when we need to stop for gas/food etc.

GO 920 Europe Maps Incomplete

I had a TOMTOM GO 910 and Greece was included in the European maps. I upgraded to GO 920 and expected improved maps. Greece was not included in their new maps compatible with GO 920. Plan to return unit. If they omit countries in their product upgrades I question their commitment to improved quality and functionality in their new products.

Customer Service is TERRIBLE !! and that's real important with GPS units

Some months have gone by and I feel I can give an assessment based on experience of using the unit AND using their tech support & customer support. This is the fifth GPS navigator I have owned, my first TomTom. With most consumer electronics products the after-sale support is only important when something goes wrong; with GPS units it's also critical even when the item is functioning correctly. Mainly because of map and technical updates and the complicated nature of these feature-loaded units like the 920. The other reviews have give lots of info on the technical aspects of TomTom devices, so I'll just say that it works reasonably well if you don't expect to use features like voice-entry and bluetooth syncing with your cell phone. I would give it a 3 out of 5 for operational performance. It's the customer support that really brings down the score: it's horrible! First, it takes many, many days to get an answer via email. Forget about toll-free phone assistance: you'll miss at least one meal waiting for someone to answer your call. My 920 package included a fancy certificate with computer-generated code (called "Always up to Date") that supposedly represented one year free map updates of the maps that came with your unit. That's what the certificate said, and it gave instructions how to obtain these. Problem was, it didn't work, so this initiated many email requests for technical assistance from me. First they said I had to fax them my receipt, even though this model was introduced less than a year ago and the guarantee is for one year. Okay, once that was done, the Activation Code on my certificate was apparently inoperable and the 1-year guarantee it clearly stated turned out to be 30 days. And the maps it guaranteed? only North America, not all the maps (namely, Europe) like the certificate promised. By the time all the delayed emails had been sorted out, my 30 days was up and I was out of luck. Too late to return it to the vendor, too. Everywhere I asked for advice while shopping for this GPS I was consistently told "Buy Garmin" !! Foolishly I ignored this advice and now I'm stuck with a so-so unit that has one-year-old maps. Don't make my mistake; Please !! Buy Garmin

Garmin nüvi 200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigat

Garmin nüvi 200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

buy, cheap, premium, lowprice, low price, best, business, pesonal, car, auto, motorcycle, portable, position

Great affordable Garmin

The Gamin Nuvi 200 is fine for all my GPS needs. I can't imagine paying twice the price for the minor upgrade options... The 200 will find attractions and stores... I enter the address and it tells me how to get there. Simple. Once it took me to the totally wrong back woods cabin... but I was in the back woods... it can't know every dirt road in the Poconos... Totally worth the price.

Best for the money

This is my extended family's 5th nuvi 200. We like the simplicity of the model and the low profile compared to the original boxy designs from a few years ago. A zip code input option would be nice, but it's worth not having to get such a good price on a quality Garmin unit.

Took me in the wrong direction!

After reading all the postive reviews, I purchased this model since I just wanted a basic GPS. I recently moved to Florida and needed one to help me get around a new area. After using it a few times down here the GPS has sent me in the wrong direction every time! For example, it will tell me to take a left for .6 miles and then it will tell me to make a u-turn and go back in the same direction I came from for .6 miles. Then it took me North on the FL Turnpike only to tell me to take the next exit and head South. It made me late for my first day of work. I don't know if I just have bad luck and got a unit with old maps, but I'm definitely returning this.

Exceeds expectations for a low price

I've recently been doing more driving into areas I'm not familiar with. And so, I thought maybe a GPS would be the ticket for someone in my situation. I was skeptical. I researched different models. I picked the Garmin Nuvi 200. I would just like to say to others who might be considering this model, I am very happy with it. Exceeded my expecations. I actually kind of love using it. Aside from the speeding ticket I got the first day lol. A lot of common sense is built into it. It only tells you what you need to know, when you need to know it. It does not in any way bother you or annoy you while you're driving if there's no turn coming up. You are free to change your route. It adjusts automatically, on the fly. If you stop to pull in for gas or food, I guess it senses your speed from the fact that your GPS coordinates are not changing. It waits. Once you're done, and I guess it's sensing your motion again, it just resumes right where it left off, and reminds you when to turn. You do very little to use it. I love also the ETA that updates in real time. When I use my GPS, I feel more relaxed. I think I drive better and it makes me feel safer, too. I feel less stressed out and I enjoy my ride more. I'm talking about when I have to drive somewhere out-of-town that I'm not familiar with. Well, that's my review. For a low price, I think it's really amazing. Highly recommended.

Garmin Nuvi 200

My first purchase for this affordable navagation system and I love it. Small screen and easy to use and easy to view. I like the colors and no glare. Doesn't block too much windshield. No bells and whistles but just right for my use. I recommend it. Downloads from my computer to the devise take forever but still worth it.
